I also think it is for increasing their advertisement
Whatsapp was advertisement free and many people used it and some dont use Fb.
Just have to wait and see what changes will happen to whatsapp

People are using whatsapp nowadays rather than using Facebook messenger so due to decreasing in popularity of Facebook, Mark thought to buy whatsapp to increase brand value of Facebook.

Facebook brought Whattsapp to knock out the competition, Whatsapp claimed to have over 350 million active users that almost 700 million less than Facebook, recently found in 2009, Facebook thought it would beat them.. so they brought it.

They now own the big database of phones all over the world.
Now they will start verifying uses for facebook account verification.
