Why do YOU think Facebook bought WhatsApp

As you may or may not know Facebook bought Whatsapp a few days ago and i have a report to write on it. I need suggestions to why they may have bought it. Here is my view:

I think they bought it because from personal experience people who use whatsapp tend not to have facebook (my family all do this) so facebook could basically force users to create a facebook account in order to use the app just like Google+ done with the silly new youtube system. And they know twitter is catching up with facebook fast so maybe they need a big boost of users?

What do you guys think?

Yes that true whatsapp is 100% social, and you don't have companies in your phone book. Many companies and online services would love to send you messages in your whatsapp box while it's free messaging.
 
To get access to mobile users. Who knows what they plan to do with the data.
 
What's app allows people to talk from country to country for free. Also, in china a company like WhatsApp controls a huge portion of vending machine markets or something like that. YOu can buy grocerys with their whatsapp style app, and the majority of china uses it. so they may be going for that?
 
It is because WhatsApp holds a different type of audience.

The whatsApp audience is an older generation that does not use facebook. Facebook is trying to diversify, and so they were willing to pay the high ticket price.

They bought instagram for much less, because many of the users who used instagram also used facebook.

All about trying to get ads to every type and age range so they can earn more.
 
Mark says they got whatsapp for cheap..not sure how true is that and i also heard google were ready to pay more thn 19 billion $
 
Maybe they just want to use the whatsapp to advertise. Maybe I'm offering a too much simple answer, but think about it, why don't use that huge platform, filled with users who are checking it every moment, why don't show them some ads? in the corner? in the bottom? I don't know, obviously I'm just guessing. Maybe they are just trying to make more money.

In my country people used to communicate with the BlackBerry pin or Whatsapp for those who didn't use BB. With the BB losing tons of people, everyone is using whatsapp in their cellphones. Here, people don't use FB to chat, well not as much as whatsapp. But you made a point.
 
So Zuck can send pictures of his junk to millions of people at once... same reason he made Facebook. It's coming people.
 
There's a proven business model that was pioneered by Line which is provided by the Korean company Naver. Line is very profitable & Facebook will just use their business model.
Also the app have a large user base in China already.
Naver's stock price dropped as a result of the buy.
 
It's young milk cow and Mark now has ocean of money to spend ..why not ?
 
Its strictly for advertising and info collection from a broader audience. Think about how thatcapp has access to everything you do on your phone. That's valuable info,$14billions worth to be exact.
 
They paid for the userbase, not because the app is good.

Millions of active users = profit.

I don't expect blatant ads in the near future, but who knows. Maybe they'll introduce official Whatsapp groups for businesses.
