Some open source projects offer jobs too and money too.
Apart from that it's a a great flex if you have worked on the software that your company where you work is using. I mean like if they are using any open source tool and you tell them in that software you fixed something for free it really shows companies that you are interested in programming rather than just money.
Also, the people who are always active on GitHub are not your daily programmers.

Where can i open a case? Do you know which mod I could contact?
It was for a jarvee version. Sent me a link with a file that doesnt work and then blocked me and changed his username. even put "bhw" in his username the fool. luckily i took screenshots

knowledge and looks good in your portafolio, free projects usually are good and huge that solve big problems that big companies never do and they just ignore and while working you have support of other developers and they can help you to learn more so is always a win win.

As a programmer, you build tons of software for your own usage. Then, instead of working on it on your own, you share it for others. Another programmer uses it, finds a problem and solves it. So, its kind of part of your daily workflow. And everyone benefits from it instead of everyone building same thing from scratch
So, its callobration work and really fun. I blieve this should grow in other parts of our life as society.
