Since Wordpress came out with the twentyten default theme for WP 3.0+ i see a ton of sites created using this theme to rank extremely well.

I dont understand why. Even bran new sites that have no content rank very high. Why does google love this theme so much?

There has to be a reason and really other than using it i cant figure it out.

My site has 200+ backlinks in a niche yet a twentyten site that has no content ranks at the very top. All the guy did was put wordpress theme online but he has done nothing else.

I will have to do a test to find out why these themes rank so high with little to no effort.

What so special about this theme?
Iv looked at the code, there is nothing spectacular there
Only thing i see is the tagging system it uses is slightly better than the others otherwise is simple and basic

Unless your blind, you should have noticed these themes ranking very high for all niches.

Lol, I thought I was the only one seeing this. I am not sure why it ranks so well. There has to be a reason that WP made it the default instead of the Kubrick of 2009 (I think that was it).

It seems like the sites I see doing well with it are pretty basic, and not really well done, leading me to think it really is the theme.

I have seen a few that made it look really nice though. You can make a custom header, etc without having to eff around with the php files.

I am going to start using it more now that you reminded me how good it does. We may never know why it works so well, but I am just going to start using the sh*t out of it.

It doesn't really make sense that this theme would help a site rank well. I might try it out on a couple sites I've been neglecting and don't rank for anything...certainly couldn't hurt.

Never realised that a choice of template would change the way a SE would look at you.
Glad I read this - just about to set up a site, will use the default template with some new images to see how it goes :D

Cheers for the tip off - especially if it works!

I dont believe in it. Show me an example site that uses the theme and one that doesnt for proof.

I honestly dont think this will make any ranking difference...

Site theme got nothing to do with ranking. It is the off site optimization which count most.

it makes perfect sense that a theme can effect rankings... many people dont seem to notice the details but i messed up my site cz of theme changes only... now iam not talking specifically about twentyten but many themes show tag links and various other links in such a combination which enables the site to maintain a good internal linking structure and it improves the onsite SEO status of that site... i have a site using the twentyten theme which is on second page of that keyword and the domain doesnt have that keyword...

where as for the same keyword another site of mine is on page four (with keyword in domain and not using twentyten)...

Pop in the twenty ten theme and see what happens! Let us know..

That will prove if its the theme or somethng else.. use the split test plugin for both themes.

I've noticed the same thing, have a site with less 50 links and it outranks competitors. There's a lot of good content though, which may help, but the simplicity of the theme may be why it's doing well in the rankings.

Search engine aren't biased on a sites looks like we humans, probably he's doing something you aren't!

of course a theme can make a difference
on page SEO is still very important
they layout of the content on relation the shit like <h1> tags, internal linking, valid CSS, title and alt tags, all of that makes a big difference

its not the theme, its the optimization.

the popularity of WP is partly due to its customization capabilities and EVERY template can be made seo friendly.

There is no doubt that themes can effect search engine rankings but on a very low level. THe most likely way is their load speed. Some of the big fancy pro themes out there look good but there is so much going on that it takes forever to load and remember the majority of visitors might not have lightning fast broadband.

If your blog takes a long time to load your bounce rate is going to sky rocket because most people are not going to sit there and wait for your site.

High bounce rate means google is going to penalise you so anyone saying themes do not have any effect, you're just plain wrong

He could have a buffer domain with 50k links to it that 301 to his new domain

because everyone loves twenty ten,
on a serious note. i think its just favored. i use the twenty ten them. and im not ranking well. but my site has only been up for a few weeks.

Theme can count a lot if there is proper HTML tag placement. Minor differences, as font size, and other minor details if are properly setup can make a difference.

Consider these things:
1. Coding hierarchy
2. Fast loading time
3. Table less layout design
4. Least usage of oriental script(JS, Ajax etc)
I am sure twenty ten is better than many other themes in terms of above basic SEO friendly coding style.

The theme can make a huge difference. Has nothing to do with how it looks - all about how it works. Not only 2010 that works well.

I use some old themes from blogohblog. If i have a site with another theme that is struggling in serp and i change to these it often shows quick improvement in serp and stays that way. Some of the old free themes that work for me better than many modern themes in ranking are

Code:
http://www.blogohblog.com/wordpress-theme-firebug/

and

Code:
http://www.blogohblog.com/wordpress-theme-adspress/

It could also be that big G knows that most newbies will use the default wordpress theme and AUTOBLOGGERS will go a bit further by NOT using it. LOL

Well then thesis should be at the top, The best seo optimized theme. I dnt think theme make a huge difference. When it comes to on page seo, you can do all of that with plugins and little bit of coding. So that is nt at all a big deal. I do agree with the above comment, Search Engines are not biased.
