Hello everyone, I hope doing good all

I've seen many SEOs focusing heavily on .edu & .gov backlinks, and honestly, i use to wonder why those two extension gets much attention rather than others

So, I've done testing on both few seo campaigns, started seeing reasons. Including small amount of .edu and .gov link to existing link building campaign and over time we saw a noticeable lift in organic rankings and overall search visibility. Which also shows better AI search visibility results.

And i am saying not every edu and gov links produce same results, but the results from those campaign definitely made me takes these links seriously.

Has anyone tested this links specially for ai seo?

I wouldn’t give the .edu or .gov extension credit by itself. What matters is the actual page, relevance, authority, and whether the link is editorial.

For AI visibility, I’d be more interested in whether those sites are being cited as trusted sources, not just whether the backlink exists.

The leaked Claude system prompt actually did specify gov sites as a favoured source of information:
Code:
Favor original sources (e.g. company blogs, peer-reviewed papers, gov sites, SEC) over aggregators and secondary sources. Find the highest-quality original sources. Skip low-quality sources like forums unless specifically relevant.
So one vector if you can get content on a .gov domain is to include positive information about your business along with whatever other supporting information you can.

Such instances are not new to me, however, I believe that the hype is more than deserved by the domain extension. The presence of an EDU or GOV page which has true authority may help, but relevance and site quality should also be considered.

I think the domain extension itself is less important than the quality and relevance of the backlink an .edu or .gov link can be valuable when it comes from a relevant trusted page but i would not assume the extension alone gives an seo boost I’d be interested to see more controlled testing around AI search visibility too.

My opinion is that just the extension .edu or .gov is not a ranking factor; relevance and link quality are more important. Also, I would like to have more information about their effect on AI search results.

You can focus more on getting links from useful and trusted pages instead of choosing a link just because it has a .edu or .gov domain.

Yea.. looking at authority and relevance of actual linking page rather than domain extension alone. For ai seo comparing with edu and gov placement with other authoritatuve sites could gives clear picture of whether the extension itself adds anything

Search engines heavily trust .EDU and .GOV domains because they require strict official verification, making links from them act as massive authority and trust signals that boost both traditional rankings and AI search visibility.

.edu and .gov links get attention because they are usually trusted domains, but the quality and relevance of the link matters more than the extension.

I think the domain extension gets too much attention. A relevant and trusted .com can be more valuable than an unrelated .edu or .gov link. I’d focus more on relevance, page quality, and the actual authority of the linking source.
