Why do Reddit Moderators have alot of power in Banning people. What other powers do they have ?

Hi. Just a Quick one here. Why do Reddit Moderators carry alot of power in Banning Accounts that they choose?
Also, what other powers do they have other than suspending, and Banning ?

I often wonder why a reddit account would be suspended after posting on a Heavily moderated subreddit.
 
It's like any group, forum or community, they have total control over their subreddit
 
I don't think is worst than any moderation on any forum. You must respect the rules to not get banned is as simple at is sound
 
That's true, reddit mods have a lot of powers, if you are moderating in big crypto/OF subreddits you can earn a lot of money

Reddit moderators have full control over their subreddits since each community operates autonomously. Reddit allows them to ban users and enforce rules without direct intervention from the platform.


Their other powers include:


  • Deleting posts and comments.
  • Restricting participation (karma, account age, etc.).
  • Using bots to filter content automatically.
  • Modifying subreddit rules and appearance.
  • Temporarily or permanently closing a subreddit.
 
besides moderating who knows, remember redit is big and how degenerate some topics can be seconds after being post, maybe but not all mods might have other duties but who knows how much they can see and control.
 
They can see post histories, ban by keywords, and even nuke entire threads.

they can see, or notified by reddit if you been previously banned, or banned in other subs. they can also message admins to report you as a "serial problem, and admin can ban you sitewide" some mods have the Admins ear, so if you look the modsupport sub, you can tell alot of them are in cahoots with the admins. also getting banned from a subreddit does make you more susceptible to a sitewide ban in general, anedotl, but it most likely flags your account. also any future acc, even the ones that you make years later, can recieve a ban.

also certain things can get banned sitewide, like hatespeech or obvious attempts at misinformaiton, or causing divisive arguments. also mods tend to be super anal around reports from other users, if enough reports you, you will get banned, or if you attempt to report other people you will get banned if the mod doesnt like the way you reported someone else, i had several instances of this occur on different accounts.

This is the response I have been Looking for, But I had lacked words on how to express it.
I think if someone understands how reddit bans work as you have explained it above, then one could avoid multiple problems, and learn how to maintain their setup. Thanks alot

its getting harder to even for new accounts to comment without getting comments removed, or banned. some subs have recently increased thier filter sensitivity, so they are more likely to ban than before. "thier alleged reason, i got a message in one of my banned accounts " due to increase in "spam" we require a higher karma or whatever bs to comment on this sub. they well aware of whats going on with the increased bannings.
 
Not sure how it is now but last year you had 92 out of the Top 500 subs who were controlled by just the same 4 people. Each sub has it's own rules that are often vague but the mods just rule how they see fit. They don't get paid and probably don't have a good life but power is their compensation. That combined with them not having any overhead who holds them accountable is what made Reddit so toxic. I'm not even sure if Reddit has a support team for users at this point because they don't seem to reply for help.

Reddit moderators have full control over their own subreddits, but no platform-wide authority. They can:
  • ban users from their subreddit at their discretion
  • remove posts or comments without needing a reason
  • enforce their own rules, even stricter than Reddit’s official guidelines
  • use AutoMod to automatically filter accounts, keywords, domains, or behavior
They can’t delete or suspend your Reddit account (only site admins can), but being banned from several key subreddits can make your account almost useless.
This is why many Reddit operators use clean mobile proxies to reduce detection risk and avoid getting flagged across multiple subs.
