Why can't they just have 1 programmer instead of having a whole department?

Because one guy doing all the programming would not work. Just way to much to do.

OP im assuming you know nothing about coders or never work with one ether?
your question is like "why car dealership needs so many dealers why 1 couldn't do the job for them"

What would be too much to do? there's some sites that only have one programmer. POF is an example when it was starting.

Did you not just answer this yourself? Facebook is now one of the biggest websites on planet Earth. You think one dude can sit there and control everything the website has to currently offer? There is so much work to be done and processed and thought of DAILY.

I know, but what kind of work can they do that 1 programmer can't?

There are only so many lines of code a programmer can analyse, fix or write in a day. FB needs to constantly improve upon existing code, fix bugs, write new code. Different programmers specialise in different technologies. Its better to have someone that is exceptionally good at JS and that is all they do, compared to one programmer that's decent in allot. FB needs to concern themselves with efficiency, because whit that many users a 1ms increase in one query could mean thousands of dollars for them.

Its hard to answer your question without knowing the intricate details of how FB works. The simple answer is: They have more work to do than one person could handle.
