carpeting absorbs noise a lot better than hardwood. if anybody's living in the apartment above you, you'd ideally want it to have a carpeted floor.
A not so fun story when I lived with my parents the people upstairs let their 8 year old run riot. This girl would run around the house all day even on the sunny days, which are a rarity in Scotland and should be cherished, in her SHOES.
When I visit family in Northern Ireland (ah, can't wait to get back there again), it is normal to wear shoes inside. It's odd to remember that as when you visit people here in Canada, normally you are expected to take your shoes off at the door.
When my family members come visit here, they seldom remember they are supposed to take their shoes off when they visit other people's homes.
In Canada, you pretty much have to be in that habit due to the weather; footwear can get pretty muddy and dirty especially when it snows. However, in N. Ireland, you just need to give your shoes a good wipe on the mat at the door, and you're fine.
