The police came to my door to ask if I recognized a phone number. I didn't recognize it and I told them, but after that they began asking me for my personal details such as phone number, name, date of birth, and even where my family was at the time.

Why did they do this if I already told them I knew nothing? I feel like it's possible I looked suspicious, but still it's weird that they asked me. I mean is this standard protocol?

they take your information so they can reach you over the phone in case they find out you lied :D

Some neighbor must have phoned them for suspicious activities in your house... may be last night you had some riot going on in your bedroom for too long. :D Especially when the (your) family was away... Hmm... they could've scanned your ID though. Looks like those weren't real police after all! Beware tonight and keep the doors locked and throw away the keys... imo.

Yes it is normal.Don't say anything to incriminate yourself to ANYONE or anywhere like social media. Just answer what they ask. That's it and keep it as short of answers as possible if you choose to answer. If they had shit on you then, they would have yolked you up then. They are checking your story trying to see if your a fit for what they want.

Remember don't say anything. If you need a lawyer get one. Don't try to bullshit the cops, let the lawyer.

hahaha I think they would rather catch me in person if they found out I lied

99% sure they were real, but I'll keep an eye out

You're absolutely right, thanks for the advice

Update:

just got word that my neighbours weren't visited and it was just me. Earlier today, I texted a friend the word "genocide" in reference to some flies i had dealt with lol, maybe that's what triggered them? Seems like a long shot but you never know

In my opinion, unless you were reported (your post/s by e-readers; your activities or lack of it by cautious/suspicious/troll neighbors especially if you're living alone, even reported by some friend for whatever reasons) they wouldn't be so nosy. They could be watching the various kinds of FBs, Twitters, etc. for some dangerous keywords definitely, and be collecting information about those writers after the terrorists (and their likes) are taking over the internet in a big way. In such a case, they would be watching the writer for a long time imo, may be even if they know that the writer is really harmless. They have to be cautious and informed, especially nowadays... Be careful about what you say/write on the internet even among your e-friends or relatives. Hard time now, but it's good for all concerned.

The more questions, they ask, the more time they get to fill in the blanks. They will check if you are stammering, sweating, your body language etc. It gives them important clue, whether you are lying or not.

You need to move ASAP. Preferably different state.

It is possible that some hacker have used your information or something related in his crime. so just be carefull.

I'm sure they have an entire task force dedicated to what little fuckboiz are saying bad things via text.

I don't live in the US, but I've texted some way worse shit than 'genocide' and no police ever come to my door.

Just get a couple of burn phones, pay cash for them.
