Can someone give me some ideas as to what I might be doing wrong?

I have a website that I have been working on (off-and-on) for a year. The many search phrase that I am trying to rank for has a search volume of about 20K/month. I would prefer not to reveal the niche, but I will try to give as much info as possible so that you can understand where I am coming from.

My problem is, I cannot get the site to rank for this main search term. I have been as high as page 2 (and am now at about bottom of page 3).

1.) The site is a Wordpress blog
2.) I did some article marketing for this site about a year ago to start building some links.
3.) I also did directory submissions, social bookmarking, etc.
4.) I got away from it for several months and about three months ago started another round of articles, bookmarking, etc.
5.) I have also done some blog comenting, forum commenting, etc. to build additional links.
6.) The site currently has close to 1000 backlinks in YSE.
7.) There are several pages of the site that rank in the top ten (mainly for specific product names).
8.) I don't think my site is being penalized for two reasons - A.) I do rank for some search terms. B.) If I search for my site name, it is at the top of the list. (I have read that, if you are penalized, this will not happen.)
9.) While Traffic Travis (if you are familiar with it) says that this search term would be "difficult" to rank for, Market Samurai seems to show that it would be easier.
10.) Traffic Travis rates the on-page SEO of my site at B+.
11.) According to Market Samurai:
a.) My page has more total backlinks than any of the top 10 (several of them have more total site backlinks).
b.) I have over 100 backlinks to my page with the EXACT anchor text as this search term. Only positions 1 & 2 come close to this number.
c.) While I do not have the search term in my base website name, it is part of the URL (as the page name) - www.website.com/this-is-the-search-term
d.) While my page is only PR2, none of the others are over PR4, and some of the top 10 are PR0.
e.) I have 11 EDU & GOV backlinks. One other site has one, and none of the others have any.
f.) Most of the top 10 are not listed in DMZ or YAH.
g.) There are no "authority" sites listed in the top 10.
12.) The real kicker is that the site that is listed at number 10 is a ONE PAGE SITE WITH A TOTAL OF THREE BACKLINKS. It is nothing but a page with a link to the number 9 site.

Does anyone have any ideas?...

And HOW IN THE WORLD is the site at number 10 even showing?...especially ahead of me (when I can't get lower than 26)?

Google loves unique content. Add unique stuff and you might start to climb up

how is your content? your bounce rate?

off page is one part, on page is another.

You say close to 1000 backlinks..
remember you will loose some along the way.
Get 2000 more. Rise up.

1,000 backlinks and a PR2 with a years work? Try checking your competitions backlinks and copy those so you have the same backlinks they do and then some. You won't be able to get them all because I doubt they are all blog comments/forum posts, but you can take a good deal of them with minimal work.

why only 100 out of 1000. What anchors do the rest of the links have?

Im already on the first page on goggle and other with more then one of my sites, this was easy, that hard thing is to atract members and visitor, I have now only around 40.000 visiters and only 3000+ members, and this after 1 year of working, I run adult dating and need to boost this alot, I run now some backlinks and ping, and also some other things but cant seem to get this thing going properly, WHAT CAN I DO ?

also if its a highly competitive keyword you may just be sandboxed through no fault of your own.

As it has already been stated above that's probably because of your content. For mid competitive and competitive niches it's not enough to write content around your main keyword only. You need content that is targeting other related keywords (hint: use the "related searches" and "wonderwheel")

Did you check the cached page for site at rank #10? Maybe it's showing something else to the google bot than to humans?

I have 12 pages of unique content on this blog. Posts written by me just for this blog and not published anywhere else.

I think my content is fine. My bounce rate is 0.63% (very low). Time on site is 49 seconds (would like longer). Avg pages viewed is 2.52. I am averaging between 30-40 visitors/day.

1000 is how many Yahoo is reporting. I have well over 10,000 links that I have created.

I just started doing this a couple weeks ago with Market Samurai. Thanks for the idea.

It is actually closer to 200 (MANY more than any of the competition). A lot of the other links are product specific links. Many links I don't have control over the text, so they are what they are.

You got to have on page optimization. Its not all about backlinks.

Run IBP software and get the site 100% Then you will notice a big improvement
I may have to give this a try. I have messed with IBP in the past, but it just seems a little non-intuitive and difficult to use. Thanks for the idea.

It's not THAT highly competitive and I don't think I am sandboxed (see reasons in original post).

Thanks for the input, but I haven't seen anything yet that I think explains it.

No takers on speculating how the site that is at #10 can be there when I can't even get to the second page???

The site is basically a "Review Site". There is a general review post comparing all the products. There are 4-5 separate posts detailing each of the individual products. There are also another 5-6 posts of content "related" to the niche. There are also the normal "Privacy", "Contact", etc pages on the site. So, I think there is enough "related content" on the site to satisfy Google. There are PLENTY of other sites that rank for searches with far less content than this.

I just checked the "cached" version of the #10 site (it was #9 when I just looked now) and it is identical to the page that is shown.

There are also another 5-6 posts of content "related" to the niche.

How did you determine the related topics of your site? Did you consult Google for that or did you brainstorm that on your own?

I have a draft of a document about this subject here:

Code:
http://www.docstoc.com/docs/13551143/How-to-build-a-niche-website---Vita-Vee

It's not very detailed but I would like to know if you did something similar to choose the "releated" topics of your main keyword.

Something else - When did you start trying to rank for this site?

Unfortunately, sometimes, there is no rhyme or reason of why pages rank like they do. Simply to many variables. The biggest one being corrupted algo's and false -positives that every search engines contends with daily.

It has always been a battle to NOT throw the baby out with the bath water for these search engines and always will. There is no perfect science.

If you consider the amount of time it is taking you to analyze this site, make adjustments and waiting for them to take effect in the engines -your time may be better spent developing a new site.

I would take the keyword you are trying to rank high and build a WP site with a keyword 'theme' pages surrounding that main keyword with new domain with keyword in it etc..

Sounds like you know how to create back links fairly easy, so do that.

Through up 2-3 sites in this niche and you might get other results that are better than the "one' you are trying to get now.

Hope this helps. At the very least you can do what I have suggested to 'supplement' your efforts tying to solve your dilemma with your main site.

Here are 3 POWERFUL tips that you can use that will help you reach page 1 of Google, Yahoo and Bing:

1. YOUR INTERNAL LINKS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO GOOGLE AND WILL PROPEL YOU TO PAGE 1!

Interlink (hyperlink) each of your pages within your site WITH EACH OTHER using a keyword phrase! A lot of people forget this crucial step. For example, if you have a "lose weight" website and you have one page related to flabby arms and other page related to aerobic exercise, within the content on these pages hyperlink these pages to each other using the keywords "flabby arms" and "aerobic exercise".

Also, do the same with your Privacy page, About Me page, etc. Hyperlink these pages to each other within their content.

Are you following me? Do you understand the power of this method?

2. NEVER...NEVER...HAVE THE EXACT SAME ANCHOR TEXT WITH ALL OF YOUR BACKLINKS!

Why?

Because this raises a RED FLAG with Google and they penalize you. Mix up your backlinks anchor text with other related keywords and miscellaneous keywords such as "click here" , "hello" or your name. Don't laugh...IT WORKS!

If you use Angela's or Paul's back links packages, use my 95% - 5% rule. Anchor text 95% of your back links with the keyword phrase that you are targeting and anchor text the remaining 5% with another related long-tail keyword or "click here"!

3. Double-check Traffic Travis and Market Samurai by manually checking your 10 competitors' level of strength that are currently occupying the 1st page! You can do this by using link-assistant.com. I know this may be a lot of work but sometimes this tool will uncover these sites' secret linking pattern.

Good luck!

Good tips here, especially regarding anchor text.

It is statistically highly unlikely for more than 60% of your links to contain the same anchor text if they are genuine links. Straying above this level will not definitely get you in trouble, but it will significantly increase the probability that the bot will find something wrong with your site and suppress your rankings.

add google hosted content
google loves backlinks to there sites

I have downloaded Traffic Travis as part of this conversation and started checking it out. I looked at link-assistant and just wondered why use that versus the backlink checkers in MS and Traffic Travis? They both seem fairly complete...

Thanks

Are you using that KW for your anchor text in all your thousands of backlinks? ;o
