Why Bulk Gmail accounts

Why do marketers buy bulk gmail / hotmail accounts, what's the purpose of that?
Could it be just to use them as free SMTP servers for emailing?
Can someone explain to me the other uses, thanks.

I think because gmail has higher % for success in automation process.

gmail accounts are google accounts, can be used on youtube and g+ aswell
