I'm wondering what's the point of manually building so many backlinks in tier 1? Most tutorials about link pyramid suggested that you build a couple of Wordpress/Blogger/Tumblr/Squidoo blogs in which you place 3-4 unique articles and then point them to your money site. What I don't understand is: instead of spreading all your tier 1 links with a few articles each, why not build 1 single tier 1 site? Easier to manage and rank 1 single site and isn't quality better than quantity?

I may be misunderstanding your question and correct me if i'm wrong. But I think your looking at it wrong.
You have your main site (Your money site) and then you can think of web 2.0 sites as mini sites that help boost your money site. So your not technically trying to rank the web 2.0 sites, you are giving them link juice to pass their authority onto your money site to inturn rank your money site.

Although a lot of it is theory imo, it's my understanding that 1 individual page can only transfer so much of it's authority to another via a link. Therefore it can take more than 1 great backlink to rank for some competitive terms, and also you need to diversify your anchor text - so one backlink is not enough. That'd be over optimization cuz essentially you'd have 1 term / kw for the anchor text of your entire backlink profile. Quality is certainly better than quantity, but you still need SOME quantity for most cases...

Possibly because it is far easier to rank a website using 10 quality mini sites than it is using 1. Also far easier to target a better selection of keywords.

Building links was great back in the day - it is one of the most complicated questions to answer

You are not going to rank for one web 2.0. You can, if you are busing it for a veryyy long time and it has some serious authority in it.
instead, you can build 10-20 sites and achieve results quickly

Yeah, it's pretty much a case of 'more is more' when it comes to your tier one properties.
Not to mention, it would be rough trying to target alot of keywords from just one property, anchor text and all that.

Because when you work very hard of building your web 2.0 authority site ... one day you may wake up and find that your authority sites is banned for some reasons etc. So its wise to have different backlinks from different web 2.0s site instead of one

Those web 2.0 blogs are giving good & relevant (niche) links to your money site. Other point is you can use black hat techniques to rank your web 2.0 blogs but not your money sites so webmasters build these blogs to point to your money site.

But Hey ! Too many backlinks are not good .

Spreading out your source of BL's is the best way forward for a whole number of reasons...
