I think the low barrier to entry in a lot of niches makes competition very tough, and it can be really hard to make it if you're not as technically skilled as your competitors or if your niche is flooded and over saturated. I think it is hard to get a foot hold but once you establish that all it takes is commitment and patience for results to start to come in.

I think seeing things through to the end and drive is key. When people stop caring, it shows up in their projects and efforts.
The other part of that is just finding the right place to start or carve out your niche to work in. Don't do things you know nothing about and expect it to work.

Gary Vaynerchuk talks about having macro patience. Most people are not willing to work on a project for six months consistently when it is not making any money. They want the latest thing that will have them making money in days even though six months of hard work will pay off in multiples.
