    My question is.....

Why are so many top ranking websites use table layouts when every where I read and everything I see says table layouts are BAD "use CSS".

by top ranking I dont mean sites like "target, GM, etc..."

just one example, ITChair ranks 6th out of 70 mil for "los angeles SEO" or webtraffic2night (forum member site), another prominent site in the SEO biz uses tables.

Now I know, the layout has very little to do with the ranking but... why would these fellas who obviously know their stuff not do CSS layout and instead stick with the annoying table layout. THEY ARE PROS! so why?

Any help would be much appreciated,

    thanks

A lot of old school SEOs started out doing html before CSS was common. Since use of tables doesn't really affect rankings, there was never any reason to learn how to do complicated table layouts using CSS. I certainly can't design for shit in CSS, but I can sure as hell rank a website.

I think tables are dying hard because ease of use and predictability. Obviously CSS is much more powerful and can make things look amazing, but without rank implications I guess many aren't in a rush.

Let a <div> rank higher than a <table> and watch them disappear overnight though.

If it ain't broke - don't fix it

I use tables cos thats what I've always done and I've always ranked them above more complicated designs

I'm a tables guy myself. It's more of a preference than anything.

G's search page is a table.
Besides this obvious hint, tables are easier to parse to get the text.

As long as its ranking i guess it doesn't matter how it's laid out, id personally never use tables to lay out a website because it's just very very bad practice - plus CSS isn't even really hard and makes upgrade ability and maintainability much easier, but thats just me, if people find better results using tables then hey - why not, money is money at the end of the day, regardless of how compliant your website is.

For what its worth i read in my SEO book never use tables for SEO. They say spiders can't read inside tables... I hear Google can now read flash and pdfs. I use css to be safe. I suppose I shouldnt believe everything published in a book anyway. Very few things in this world are black and white. Except for blacks and whites. I'm not a racist either so back off man...

I have not heard of the table tag being deprecated. The use of the table tag is still useful for displaying information from a database so I don't see why it would ever become obsolete. I also see many high ranking sites using tables as well so I'm 100% sure that google won't penalize you for using them.

But yeah I stick with divs instead, especially when there is only 1 row of information.

They use tables exactly because they are PROS... no css files to load, thus faster page loading time, resulting in better rankings for them, because everybody knows that page load time is one of the factors that google computes on rankings.

    Problem solved?? ;)

    Home Page:
Tables should be used to contain tabular data, everything else should be in <div>s, <p>s and other tags.

using a table does not negate the use of CSS. You still have to use it to style the table and everything else on your page. Unless you're using 1999 techniques.

CSS is very confusing if you ask me, well an external file is. If you do all the css in the same file then its not to bad. I use the <div> tag a lot though.

divs can be problematic in cross-browser situations and in some layout situations. Also it can suck up your time making it "like a table layout".

all the "divs are better than tables for SEO" non-sense has just been proven false by your observation. i love css and use it often but just because some anti-table css fanboy says it's bad doesn't mean it is.

bottom line, try to use divs but if you are having an issue, don't beat yourself up trying to make it work, just use a damn table - you'll thank me later......
