Why are people so afraid of getting sued?

This post isn't meant to be offensive to anyone, I'm genuinely curious.

I read all this stuff about people on this forum about "oh teh noes, what if I get sued!!!"

When I lived in the US, I got sued like 7 times. I didn't do shit. I lost every trial. I think I still owe various collection agencies like $30k.

Obviously my US credit rating is shit. I can't get a credit card, etc. But, I'm still here. I mean...my life didn't really change. My house and car were registered to someone else, so, they couldn't repossess those. I don't get it. Whats the big deal?

I believe in the US, spamming is actually a criminal offense. You can get sued by anyone in civil court though. I don't know, I just see all these posts about "watch out! google/ebay/so and so could sue you!" I don't get what the big fucking deal is.

PS: Now that I came back home, I don't even care. I'd love to see someone in the US/Europe try and fucking sue me for anything. But yeah...I'm just curious.

I got sued at 17 by the 5 big movie companies for selling pirated dvd's they had a solid case two, one of their undercover agents ordered and received 7 pirated dvds from me. I simply called them and let them know that I"m a broke high school kid and that they can take me to court all they want and even win but wont get a penny since I wasn't rich or anything. After talking back and forth they settled for $2K (they originally wanted $10K). The $2K was the profit I made selling priated dvds over a 2 months period anyways, so I came out clean, so overall it wasn't bad.

seven times that's a lot I never been sued once. Well yeah never mind . I was taking to court once for child support. Which is odd because I do not have any kids. I never even slept or knew the girl though i may have met her once. Any who paternity test proved it was not me which mean a big waste of time. This still puzzles me to this day.

Meh not sure how that happened heh fixed that thanks ! Yeah what I said that was the only time I was in court but it was weird. I just kept thinking to myself what in the world why am I here ?

That can only happen in America.

Anyway i voted for no i do not care if I get sued or not. Who does? Not me!

Maybe, just maybe, a lot of people are afraid of getting sued because they like owning a lot of worldly possessions that they can actually keep in their name and get credit cards and not have a shitty credit rating. Granted, if you have nothing, then you have nothing to lose, but, once you accumulate a few nice things you like to protect them or at least not have to deal with the hassle and expense of litigation protecting them.

i don't use credit, so i don't give a *k about credit/credit reports/ and credit ratings....

soo when i get a letter saying 'your credit might be effected' i laugh and toss the letter in the bin

If it's a matter of credit or evading collections/taxes.. Then yes I would be pretty distraught getting my rating jacked or being a slave to a debt that I need to pay.. People may not give a fuck, but it's what follows you(sadly). You never know when you may need to apply for something that reflects who you are based on your previous dealings..

As far as blackhat goes, I am pretty content on how I run things.. It would however, be very hard to deal with such as thing if you've established a lifestyle/business and the next day be getting sued for all you worked hard on.. Just to watch it all slip away at the crack of a mallet.

I would get the fuck out of here if it ever came to that point though when I was in some serious shit.. I can overcome getting sued though.. Hell I'd probably just fucking leave and still do business through the US as long as I had the right resources and a plan..

I owned a lot of nice "worldly possessions" when I lived in the US, and I still do. As far as not having a shitty credit rating...who cares? Credit is the reason the world economy is shit right now. Who the fuck needs credit?

i think if more people realized this, the economy would colapse for sure....too many people obsess over credit and credit rating....sure you don't have the buying power that credit provides...but life still goes on

ive been attempted to be sued a few times but all of that stuff is in my maiden name.
we just send that stuff back no longer at this address.
my husband has been sued a few times and the only one he ever actually paid was the city itself for back taxes.
the funny thing is a few of the places that sued him lost or fucked up his paperwork so when he challenged everything on his credit reports he got it down to just 2 recent bills that we are paying off is all that remains on his credit report.

I worry about being sued with a lot of the things I do. Does it stop me? Of course not. But to totally dismiss it as a possibility is irresponsible. Why burden yourself with the headache if you can avoid it? I protect myself the best I can and weigh the pros and the cons. A lot of people don't have the ambition to flee the country also. They have lives and families and don't want to jeopardize happiness for a few extra bucks.

why would getting sued make you leave the country?

If you owe $30k + and can't make a life for yourself here with shitty credit, people may leave. My point is that the OP might have a better understanding as to why people are afraid to get sued if he had to stay in the US.

i owe 60k+ and it doesnt stop me from making a life.
i never had any credit and suddenly 2 years ago when i was 23 i kept getting 5k preapproved credit card offers in the mail.

i knew i wasnt ever going to pay them i was making 12k a year at the time with a family of 5.

i got about 10 of the preapproved cards 1 was for like 8k and then i went and got walmart and target cards and burned them up too.

i figured if the companies were stupid enough to send someone who makes a little more than 10k a year high limit credit cards just because they were making good payments on student loans for 5 years they deserved to get ripped off.
i didnt realize 2 years later they would all be going broke.
