Why Are My Reels Getting Mostly Indian Traffic Instead of US Traffic?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to grow Instagram Reels accounts targeting a US audience, but I'm running into a strange problem.
The accounts are created and managed through US mobile proxies. The devices are also configured for the US region. I use US-themed music, English captions, US-related descriptions, and hashtags that should be relevant to American viewers.
However, almost every time I post a Reel, the majority of views come from India. Sometimes it's overwhelmingly Indian traffic, while I get little to no reach in the United States.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
I'm trying to understand what signals Instagram actually uses to determine the initial audience. If the account setup, device settings, content language, music, captions, and hashtags are all focused on the US, why would the algorithm keep pushing the videos to India instead?
What can I do to increase the chances of getting US traffic and recommendations? Is there something important I'm missing?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Try to make content using US native language style. And upload on content at US morning to afternoon time.

if the proxy, device, music and captions are all US and it still lands in india, the giveaway is usually the early engagement signal, not the content. IG locks the audience geo on WHO interacts in the first hour and that overrides everything else. two usual culprits: the account picked up bought/panel followers at some point (those are almost all india/SEA bots, they engage first and poison the geo), or the audio is mostly used by indian cif everything's US and it still lands in india, it's the early engagement, not the content. IG locks the geo on whoever interacts in the first hour. usual culprit: panel/bought followers (mostly india/SEA bots) hitting it first, or audio that's big with indian creators. ever run it through a growth panel, or 100% organic?reators even if it sounds 'US' so the algo maps it to that viewer base. clean accounts that seed their first 10-20 likes/comments from real US accounts in-niche flip back pretty fast. was this ever run through a growth panel or f4f, or is it 100% organic from day one?

Instagram doesn’t pick audience mainly from proxy or settings anymore

it goes by early engagement signals
if first viewers are outside US, it pushes there

to get US reach you need US engagement first, not just US setup

100% organic

Yeah, I’ve tried that as well, but it usually ends up in one of two situations:
Either the Reels don’t get any real traction at all, or they still get pushed mainly to Indian audiences anyway.
In most cases, even when I do manage to get at least 20–30% US traffic, the video still seems to cap out pretty low usually around 300–500 views and then it just dies there.
That’s what makes it confusing, because it feels like once the “wrong” geo mix kicks in, the reach gets limited no matter what the content looks like.
Not sure if it’s an account-level signal issue or something in the early distribution phase that decides the audience pool.

Got it , then how do I actually get that initial US engagement in the first place?
If the first push decides the whole geo distribution, what’s the practical way to “seed” US viewers on a fresh Reel?

Its cause you are from India, and all big tech firms can see through anti browser software and proxies. Not remember that twitter rolled it out to show exact locations? lol they aren't the only ones that have developers that can write tech that puts you out of business. You'll never find a solution, as there is literally 100's of millions being spent to stop people who spam like you. Put it into perspective.

It mainly depends on location and where you from.If you live in south asia then there is much probability to get indian reels instead of us reels. You have to keep watching more and more us reels. That would be the solution.

I'm from Europe, thanks.

I've seen this happen quite a bit. Instagram does not rely only on proxies, device settings, hashtags, and captions to show content to audiences. The early viewers, followers, and engagement that you garner will have a huge bearing on which direction your content continues to go. If you find that your early viewers are from India, for instance, which has a massive amount of individuals who speak English, Instagram will seek to test your content with similar audiences.

To gain more visibility for your content in the United States, seek to garner followers from the United States, like accounts in your niche from the United States, ensure that your content is posted during the various time zones of the United States, and that your content includes topics and references specific to the United States. Engagement from United States users will help to show Instagram the direction that you would like your content to travel. As such, your audience behavior matters more than your device settings.

Why you not just running from a home ip, and targetting european traffic then? That will go viral to the states relativly easier than whats happening to you now lol

That's more common than you might think, the main reason is that the algorithm detects that your content resonates better with an Indian audience than with a US audience, instagram tests each Reel with an initial group where it believes it will be most successful, and if that group is in India, the video starts to expand within that country.

The second factor is market size, India is Instagram's largest market, with a huge and very active user base, there's a much higher audience density available there than in the US, so it's purely statistical, if your content has any element that the artificial intelligence associates with the Indian market, it's natural that it will start testing it there first, if your goal is to reach the US, you'll have to train the algorithm, you need the US users to share and watch the entire reel when it reaches them, the direct message share metric is the most critical of all, if your content performs well in India but US users ignore it, the algorithm will continue to show it there, also check your settings in case you have any regional restrictions accidentally enabled.

Lol, maybe because I'm running mass accounts? Anyway thanks for your answer.

the issue could be timing. Maybe you upload the videos during indian time even though the account is setup for US. As other suggested, match your timing to US morning time or evening, but as long as youre getting traffic its not a big deal

Basically this. Its not rocket science. Big population=Cheap traffic. Similar for China and other Asian places...
Instagram often tests Reels with the audience most likely to engage first, and India has a massive active user base. Focus on creating highly US specific content, posting during US peak hours, engaging with US based accounts, and building early engagement from US users to help train the algorithm toward your target audience.

IG care more about who watches and engages first. If the first viewers are mostly from India, it can keep pushing the reel there.

Turn off AI translation on your videos and run US Instagram ads to retrain the algorithm

The content is a big factor, if it's not entertaining to US users they won't watch it most of the times.

It's probably because your content is getting more engagement from people in India or the account already has a history of indian traffic.

if it's 100% organic then the audio is the next suspect. trending sounds carry their own audience graph and if a sound is big in india the reel rides that graph regardless of where you post from. test one reel with original audio and watch the first hour geo. and since you run mass accounts there's a third option: ig clusters accounts by infra fingerprint, if your farm shares a cluster with the bot pools you inherit their distribution. is the geo bad on every account or only some of them?
