Why are forums dying?

And all people stopped sending e-mail... referral traffic is part of the past. I'm the last person on earth browsing sites different than large social media platforms.

The forums as we knew them are dying, we all used to be on other forums I would imagine.
We are just not comfortable with what forums has become nowadays, facebook, reddit, etc etc.

So, social media has evolved greatly in the last 10 years.

Having a Facebook for family & friends and an instagram for vacation/interests/imagery only is the common.

The social activity that existed on a forum is now done in FB groups, pages, and Reddit/twitter.

BHW succeeded because it’s evolved to incorporate new marketing ideas and making money online will ALWAYS be something that’s discussed.

Also, BHW has a phenomenal staff & set of OG members that still post regularly.

I see only BHW has survived, and I don't know how much longer it will last.

In my opinion, nothing compares to a forum. A forum feels like a local bar where you sit, chat, tell stories, and learn from others.

I can't get that feeling or knowledge from Reddit, social apps, or Quora. You don't know the person responding to you. Members in forums feel like real people, while on those apps, they seem like NPCs. You see them once and never again. I can't understand why forums are dying one by one. Nothing can truly replace them, but somehow, it did. What am I missing?

Things change, though I'd argue Reddit is more a replacement for USENET. Reddit is a bunch of smaller groups kind of like alt.2600, alt.binaries.warez, etc. when a forum, such as BHW, is a large collection of people discussing one topic or niche. And things like IRC became Discord, it's just changes and not always for worse IMO. These days yeah IRC is a lot smaller, USENET too, but those are places reversed for (for lack of a better term) smart people at this point because the barriers to entry are higher. All the dumb ones are on Reddit, Discord, etc. but if I want a good conversation that's pretty easy to find on IRC these days; USENET has a lot of spam though. Higher barriers to entry keep the trolls and stupids away.

Forums themselves, I haven't noticed much of a change actually. The old ones still exist, yeah there's not too many new forums coming online it seems, but what's out there is stable.

Personally, I'm still a fan of BBS. These days its all over Telnet rather than actual dialing over phones, but the barriers to entry are so high that basically no one but uber nerds will do it in 2024.

I agree with you, it's unfortunate. I don't understand why other people can't see what we see in forums like this.
As to why, I'll be honest, I genuinely have no idea. Maybe people simply prefer social media over a lesser known community forum.

Some people will always come back to them, and they serve a unique value that algorithmic social media sites can't serve.

Forums are not dying, there are new types of platforms appeared - Facebook, VK, Messengers, TG with channels etc. They all replace forums in some way.

I think it's not dead, it's just that the environment doesn't suit you and makes you uninterested. Reddit is still very powerful but I don't like the interface and environment there, but 60% of my friends are there, I'm here - BHW because I like this environment

I think we've seen a glimmer of hope in recent months. People seem to be turning more and more to communities, including forums rather than social networks.

Yeah, I agree with you, because I can solve most of my problems and questions in the forums, and I've been seeing a lot of posts lately that I'm interested in.
