You always want to purchase whoisguard when you buy the domain so it is active from the moment that the domain registration is enabled. If you apply whoisguard at a later time, some whois scrapers and services like domaintools (or google) will already have got your unhidden whois info and it will show in your whois history.
I always use fake but real-looking whois info as a matter of principle so it's not really an issue - I don't want to have my real or company name associated with any domain.

Thanks for that. Do you mean you sign up with the registrar with the fake info, or put it in after you buy the domain?

When you sign up at the registrar you can use whatever info you like, although at some registrars your account info must match the info on your credit card.
When you use fake whois with a domain, you MUST use the fake info when you are filling out the whois info when you initially buy the domain ie. right from the very start. If you enter your real info initially and then change it later (even just a few minutes later) then you run the risk of your real info showing in the whois history for that domain.

For a few bucks someone can see all the contacts the domain has been under.

I have no idea, because I would never use GD again, because they're a bunch of scumbag thieving cunts who seized 300+ domains off me for link spamming. Fuck those assholes.

Nothing to tell really. I had 300 porn domains there, some ass wipe complained about me dropping my links, GD seized the domains and changed the DNS to their parking page. They wanted $200 PER DOMAIN before they would consider unlocking them. They were lurid porn domains about pissing and pregnant porn etc. but even so, they pinched my domains that were earning some nice coin and never gave me a chance to tell my side of the story. Never again. This was a few years ago now but I doubt they've got any better.

In fact this was one of the incidents that motivated me to move to mainstream, because people are way more uptight if you drop a link that says "hardcore shemale butt fucking" rather than "credit consolidation" for some reason.

Ok, I get that they might not be sites that general public like, and link spamming is bad. But doe the law actually allow Godaddy to do that, just seize all your sites? That means they can do that even if you're not doing porn, say just have SEO sites talking about black hat.

GoDaddy can't do this themselves unless they get orders from court or concerned authorities. I suppose you could sue them over this.
Say you have your domain at one place and your hosting at another. Is anyone able to see your info from your hosting side? OR just whois from the domain name?

Just the whois that's on your domain. Of course you will probably be paying for hosting via a credit card, so it's difficult to hide your real info unless you can get a CC in a fake name.
