Nobody said it was bad. .us works very well. I know this personally, because I own one and it's ranking. It's not an EMD either.

the tld matters only for branding.
People won't remember the .us, they'll always tell others go to blahblah.com, even if it's .us - it's not popular among the masses

Yes it does, which can give you a small advantage. Though I personally prefer brandable domains now a days

I guess you will see someone say it in all of those standard TLD discussions. Personally I recommend having a local TLD if you wanna rank in Germany for example, better get a .DE even though .COM can rank surely. But in Google.US I'm sure .US and .COM are equally good. Though I have no evidence, I'm sure there is no big difference.

I agree on a local TLD if thats the traffic you seek, especially if the native language isn't english.

.us is fine for ranking... for ranking, the tld doesn't matter
For brand recognition you bet you butt it does. Most non-internet people who visit your site from a google search are very likely to remember .com, .org, and .net much more likely compared to the other tlds. Even with a .us, they could THINK it was a .com
That's the only thing wrong with it. - but that's not even a big deal, it's just, the .com is better if you can get it.

Yepp exactly!! The best chance of "typing in" a domain should be .com.

No one said it was bad. The reason we use .COM instead is not for Google, it's for our site visitors. Since time immemorial the general non-internet savvy public has associated websites with .COM all of their most trustworthy web sites have a .COM address. The reason to use it, is not for SEO benefit it's because you're assuming people will have more confidence in your site and will be more likely to buy your product or click your affiliate link. It's debatable of course.

I don't remember seeing anyone expressing that .us is bad. Dot COM domains are better because it's easier to remember. Even the iPad contains a ".com" button on its keyboard. It isn't just pure SEO that I use .com; I use it to aid me while receiving direct traffic. It would be a shame if a returning individual that is less knowledgeable about current technology went to "localshop.com" instead of my "localshop.us". I would be losing out on valuable and monetisable traffic.
In Google's algorithm there is a weighting for the different TLDs and ccTLDs.
You can certainly rank a .us domain, but it's weighting falls below .com, .net, .org. So, all else being equal a .com would rank above a .us every time (again, all things being equal).
As someone else mentioned, if you expect to get significant direct navigation traffic you will bleed a good chunk of that to the .com domain. Example of this, Slickdeals.net is a huge deals site. They were bleeding a lot of traffic to the .com version (which someone owned and parked) and Slickdeals.net went and probably paid high five into the six figures for the .com version and it only redirects to their .net site.
