Just curious to know.

Who prefers to opt for a server directly at home, and to host their website at home?
In my opinion, I think it's not too profitable, and quite complicated, but tell me if you think I am wrong.

I have my Home Assistant server at home… but I would never put my sites at home. It's not only absurd (although I have a top tier UPS with solar panels and batteries) but my Internet connection is tier 3 at best.I doubt anyone around has anything better than tier 3 at home, even relying on unlimited 5G.

If you have 500 visits per month, maybe you could consider this… (or pay $2/mo hosting). But if you have 500K visits/mo, personally I don't see any value on risking the business for free.
 
I run a local server for dev purposes but would never think of hosting any actual sites, especially with the price of home energy at the moment!

I do have a 1gbps connection though so I could run late-90s/early 2000s era speed hosting ;)

Could you give an example of what a “tier 3” internet speed is?

Maybe a download/upload internet speed results?

Noone serious host websites at home for many reasons. Some people run some scripts or software at home PC, but trying to host website(s) on home PC is (with all respect) just stupid. If you want to save on hosting oracle cloud, amazon and many others have free tier, you get $5 vps for free.

I was running kinda "server" at home because I wanted to connect to 20 4G proxies I have in my place over LAN, but that's another story.

Tiering is more about stability and robustness of your infrastructure.

I think this graph shows this. Most web hosting servers are hosting under Tier 2 datacenters at least. Most sellers just purchase little pieces from bigger datacenters. For example Digital Ocean used to buy from AWS (not sure if they actually build their own centers, which is probable due to their huge growth in the past few years).

Tier 1 are the actual telecom providers.

Many little telecom providers are barely tier 3 providers with 1 or serveral 10Gb link. And it is not only about speed but as I said stability including power sources, protection against disasters, etc.. (aside from OVH gigantic disaster in their datacenters early 2022)

Nowadays you can host your site even for free. For staging purposes you can even purchase in this forum AWS free credit for 2 cents.

Obviously for development you 100% need to use your own machine, and even sometimes, for power computing, a good graphic card be hosted locally in your PC/local server can do real wonders. Even cheaper than hosting on a pay-per-use cloud GPU (and you can also use it for gaming in your spare times)

That's actually a much more in-depth answer than I initially anticipated, as I expected it to be 90% speed-related.

Thank you for this, did not realize the structure for hosting purposes is so vast.
 
I wish, sounds like a fun project but would be crazy expensive and a security risk (now whole world is on your network... Eeek!)

I think the main thing is here, that you have to specify exactly what kind of a server youre hosting. I mean, I have a HP proliant G6 Server at home (but I dont use it lol) and a Raspberry Pi 4B with 8 GB RAM, which is also good for day to day use.

15 Dollar a year for the Raspberry pi. I think its very good. But you could argue that you find better offers for new members like 12Dollar a year with a 4core and 8 gb RAM server.

All in all I can say, if you have just a few things that you want to run off, you could simply use your raspberry or an other device that sucks like 5watts an hour, and youre good to go. IF you have beefy tasks open, than go on Vultr or digitalocean.

Hello Everyone, pls forgive me if my question sounds like stupid, but I am asking because I have no idea if this works or not, or even if it is possible or not.

By hosting your website at home server can you make it a DMCA ignoring hosting?

This question came to my mind after reading OP's thread. so just asking. What do you think about it? Pros, cons and challenges?
 
I think if you are trying to learn this staff that is a good idea to organize your server at home.
However, if you are going to have a serious hosted project it is recommended placing server in DC where they are stored in optimal conditions and connected to the best pipes.
 
I run local ISP mile-end connections for consumers and so the POP - Point of Presence with a Mini DC is provisioned at home, Along with that, there are many Dell & HP servers too deployed for some local application needs. With the same, VDIs, Development, and Staging environments for the cloud were set up on the same.

Sometimes gives an extra hand rather than relying everything on the cloud. But all our websites and name servers run on default cloud providers.
 
Individuals who have a personal or professional need for a server may have one at home.
 
I used to host a Hamachi metin2 server at home for like a week 10 years ago.

Now only running servers locally at home. It's pointless to host active sites at home.

I had one, for real. I had a raspberry pi, that too behind isp blocked port with dynamic ip.

I had to have another vps server (the bought server can be reused if you have multiple home severs) for being able to tunnel through my home ip. But I guess cloudflare has that solved for us now (cloudflare zero most probably, google it).

Is it complicated? It really isn’t if you know how this works. Is it worth it? Nope, absolutely not. It makes no sense to have a server running at home for a typical website. It does make sense for other services though (e.g. cctv, smart home etc).
