Instagram Begins Testing Private Like Counts In Canada

A report earlier this month suggested that IG was testing out private like counts on its platform. The idea, Instagram said, was to encourage followers to “focus on the photos and videos [shared]” rather than the number of likes they get. “During this test, only the person who shared a post will see the total number of likes,” the company added.

Now, the tests are going live — but just in Canada, for now.

This is what I saw , just now. I can't get it how it works.

Anyone has any ideas how this sort of thing could be good?
I can't imagine why would someone who wants to make money on the platform would want to hide their engagement

for me i feel confusing here. so others will not see how many likes a photo or video view ?

I live in Canada and have seen this implemented although it is not across all my accounts as of yet. From personal experience I think that it is a great update for the regular user, I like not having to worry what others will think if I post a picture. For some of my other high profile accounts, it does not make sense if I am trying to sell shoutouts or have some sort of proof of concept it is much more difficult because the likes are hidden. This being said the average user will still be able to tell how well your post is doing by the number of comments and the fact that they can still check who liked and start scrolling. This practically kills all those smmpanels selling fake likes as it does not even show, it does however encourage people to buy 150k followers or something crazy and just start selling shoutouts because no one can tell the wiser. I think that they should have an option to hide/show your likes.

Not just Canada. Bunch of people I know from other parts have it too. 1 out of 20 accounts of mine don’t have it and I’m from Canada
