Who can work this one out? Math Puzzle

if the puzzle is purely mathematical then the plus can be any operation you can think of that will give the expected results
The first that comes to mind is:
a+b is equal to a added to b and the result is multiplied by 2
in this case 6 + 4 is 20
another possible way to solve this is:
a+b is equal to a * 4
in this case 6 + 4 is 24
or
a+b is equal to b * 4
in this case 6 + 4 is 16
or
a+b is equal to a*3 + b
in this case 6 + 4 is 22
or
a+b is equal to a + b*3
in this case 6 + 4 is 18
or
a+b is equal to a*x-b*y where x-y=4
for example
x = 100
y = 96
6+4 = 100*6-96*4 = 216
The issue with the problem is that it's incomplete... for at least 2 reasons:
1. 4 never appears in the givens so you can only make an educated guess that the same rule that applies to the rest, also applies to 4
2. the only type of parameters that are given are in the form x+x, no x+y parameters are given
The best(not the correct one) answer is 20 with a maximum confidence ratio of 50%.
The reason for this is that 20 is one of the first answers that you find and also the median of the simplest answers is also 20
( 20 + 16 + 24 + 22 + 18 ) / 5 = 20.

I thought the answer was -6 :/
5x5 -1 would make it 5x4 = 20
6x6 -2 would make it 6x4 = 24
7x7 -3 would make it 7x4 = 28
8x8 -4 would make it 8x4 = 32
so....
6x4 -5 would make it 6x-1 = -6.
but obviously I was wrong..... I presume the correct answer is 20

Questions like these are always paradoxical. If we answer it logically, then the questioner will simply answer it with basic maths and if answer it basic math, they'll ask us to think logically but I like your answer. Only if these problems were that easy..

This logic would confirm the results of the other examples.
(5x2) + (5x2)= 20
(6x2) + (6x2) = 24
(7x2) + (7x2) = 28
(8x2) + (8x2) = 32
