A lot of white hat SEO writers stress writing a couple of anchor articles that are 800-900+ words based on your main (SEO low-comp) niche keywords. Many or most of the rest can be shorter, in the vicinity of 400-500 words. Aside from also having relevant links from pages with good authority, encourage direct link traffic to the key articles from relevant social media communities, forums and the like.
