whitehat seo informational backlinks question

I have been researching how i can brand a bit more myself. I have found a non competitor in the same niche using web 2.0 sites which large amounts of information gain text about what they do and pointing the backlink back at the money site. Is this helping them or helping google search understand their brand and purpose?

Web 2 is not that much powerful, only good for diversity.
