Based purely on SEO (not looks) which is the best wordpress theme? I need to set up a few sites and need something kick ass!

I like the Thesis theme. Highly SEO optimised (I don't use any other plugins when I use Thesis) very flexible you can do anything with it.

    Only two problems

    1) You have to pay for it
    2) Out of the box it's ugly and there is a steep learning curve to getting the best out of it and making it look good.

What's so great about Thesis though? As long as all the meta tags are filled by you manually or plugins, what's the use of relying on one theme for SEO? I'd much rather use a more out-of-the-box ready-to-use theme like Socrates or a premimum theme than spend hours editing Thesis and spending time making it look good (and many people don't even bother to edit thesis and leave it minimalistic, like one amazon review site I found in my niche). Does it provide other benefits to SEO i'm not aware of?

    Thanks.

thanks for this - I will check out thesis. Up until now I've been using themes by bavota which looks great but not sure how seo optimised they are - plus you have to go through and take out all the mentions of his own URLS he's stashed in the code. Other than that they're great!
