    Hey guys

so i am starting a new ecommerce website, wondering which url structure is better-

    website.com/category/title-of-this-category

    or

    website.com/title-of-this-category

In second url i remove category slug which is of no user and search engine use...

Is it the right thing to do?

    any suggestions are welcome

    thanks...

I also use the 2nd one. Doesn't make a helluva difference in terms of SEO, but when it comes to URLs, shorter is always better

For the e-commerce, the first one is better. From that, you can seperates the category & products. Also it will good for SEO

I will go with first one which should help you distinguish products from different categories.

website.com/category/title-of-this-category this one pretty good for an e-commerce site (with category).

Researching some ecommerce sites i see many big ones, under 50k alexa are using

    website.com/title-of-this-category

So i went ahead with this structure for now, as i am expecting better CTR.

e-commerce sites have a lot of products. If you are going to have 50 product pages then you should go with the first one to separate your products based on basis category.

There are instance when I simply delete the product URL and browse through the category pages to find related products under same niche.

Do /category/title. You'll save yourself headaches in the future if you want to use other methods of segregation and actually keep things under control.

If it's an Ecom site, you should bread crumb it. Not only from an SEO standpoint, but most importantly from a usability standpoint. If you have a big site, it makes sense to organize it properly.. That being said, I've seen giant websites rank like crazy on flat architecture.

SEO...like the dumb girlfriend you can't leave cause she's so hot, and you don't want any other dudes hitting it.

This structure is good for blogging : website.com/title-of-this-category
-> If you publish viral content, people will not often go back to the main category, they prefer to click into suggested content in your sidebar or below article section.

This structure is better for ecommerce : website.com/category/title-of-this-category
-> Some people will go back to the main category through breadcrumb, menu, or by cutting the URL in their browser (desktop)

It all will depend on the amount of your products, categories, skews, etc.

Have more categories/skews ? Then use a first one.

Have fewer products and just couple categories ? Use the second one.

Generally, you have to consider this in terms of SEO:

    • Don’t go more than 2-3 levels deep in your category structure
    • Include targeted keywords for the categories and page names
    • Try to keep your urls 115 characters long

In other words you have to find a way to "serve" your product in up to 3 levels in your urls.
