Which skill would you rather have?

If yo had the choice between these two skills, which would one would you rather have?

A) Web designer (css, photoshop, flash banners, website design)

B) Low end programmer (php and mysql wih javascript knowledge)

NONE. All I need to know is how to use people who already have those skill sets and be a jack of all trades.

I go for option c) - No web design skills, no programming skills, but 100% drive, hustle, and determination, with a dash of creativity.

Programmer. I do both and i can tell you first hand that everyone and there mother that have photoshop calls them self a designer. Programing makes way more money do the research and you will see . Unless you designing games your not going to make the same type of money.

yeah that one

Low end programmer definitely for 3 main reasons:

1) Aesthetically I'm not that creative.
2) I love programming (windows programming i.e: C#, C++, VB.Net and Delphi).
3) Becoming a programmer seem somewhat harder from my perspective.

i know vb and c language. even i've my own keyword research software.
100% automatic. just plug in the root keyword and it will come up with thousands of keywords. you let it run in one day and it'll analyze the competition.

but, let me tell you. i don't need these kind of tools to make money. seriously.

you just give me a laptop and internet connection only. no software and any tools. all tools have been given to you for free. (this is for seo only) you give me one week and 4 hours per day, and starting next week i will make $100 day.

so, why do i care with your 2 options? and why should you care? you should at least tell why to choose between those 2 so that people know why they should choose.

you dont really need any of those skills to make money.but if you are serious about IM then i think it gives you upper hand over others.
i would really start with w3school and complete all there tutorials in 1-2 months with practice. it will give a nice headstart. then go digging the topic of your interest . i would add c# and .net to that list.

but dont bound yourself to this things.these are just add on's.start concentrating on making money first.thats always the first priority.

Fair is fair. The reason why I list those two skills and not "SEO abilities" is that from my experience, you are dependent on learning the engine's behavior, which changes constantly. Learning to program/design.. yes you do need to update yourself with new tech but they are not as fast pace as search engine manipulation.

In any event, i agree, all you need is a laptop and the internet.. might as well log on to a forex website and trade to make money if that follows your definition..

let me tell you the truth about marketing. if you don't know how to make money without search engine, then you're not going to make much. the method that i talked doesn't involve forex. enough about marketing and my joke.

as for those skills, both have its own demands. but, asking people's opinion which is a better choice is not a good practice when making a decision. you need to know your own strenghts and weaknesses. then, decide which boat you're fitted well.

programming --> intelligent, logical and abstract thinking,
design --> creative, imagination, feeling

i'm really good in logical thinking (well, my certifications say so). that's why i took pure math. but, i was bored with this course. it's kind of so straight. not much challenge for me. the only thing that made me feel relief was whenever i was in programming classes. after all, it was not my choice but rather my family.

why do i say like this?
because i don't want you to let people choose your own destiny (or are you making decision for someone?). you can make much money with both skills. but, which one makes you feel satisfied? if you can't handle stress good enough, programming shouldn't be your choice.

This is like asking if you'd rather eat:

1) Vegetables

2) Fruits

To each his own... there's no right or wrong... or that you make more money one way or another (counter to what some guy said about programmers making more money)... it all depends on how you decide to monetize your skills... like I work with a designer that charges $100/hour, and his work is so damn good you can sell it for literally thousands of dollars to small-medium-large businesses... so it all really depends

Definitely low-end programmer. Not even close to comparison for quite a few reasons:

• You get paid more if people decide to hire you to outsource their work
• You don't have to care what a website looks like (and I'm no artist)
• You can automate almost anything with PHP (and that's one of the main themes on BHW ain't it? Automation?)
• Good PHP scripts are worth money, and are easy to protect against piracy
• Ability to work with databases, which is a must with any web-based service
• Ability to create services with monthly fees
• Wizards exist for creating HTML & CSS stuff (my favorite is Artisteer), but not for low-end programming

I could go on for hours...

Edit: Kinda enjoyed writing that, so here's some more:

• Creating a good low-end script can give you a good name. For instance, think about the guy that created X-Rumer, or take a look at my rep. It was at 10 before I created StatusMass.
• People working with low-end programming just seem more intelligent, HTML developers (not all of them, just a theme I see) can be hacks more of the time.
• Ability to create projects on Sourceforge in order to get something well-known (as long as it's free, good way to get a popular blog going & build up your name more)
• People are generally more impressed with good programming scripts than web themes, since everyone now seems to know a little HTML and CSS. But they look at a PHP script and say "WOW, YOU CAN DO THAT??!!"
• Ability to create your own custom wordpress plugins, either for personal use, sale, or free distribution (again, project followers equal $$ from adsense & sometimes donations).
• I have very bad OCD, and low-end programming is good for someone with the need to organize EVERYTHING.

Though when picking which you want to specialize in, the money & popularity shouldn't dictate it. It should be matched more with your abilities and interests. If you're a person that likes artistic things, then go with HTML & design stuff. You'll like the work better, as you're creativity won't be hidden as much behind a bunch of code. People can view and admire your work a lot easier. But if you're more of a literal person (like me), find a programming language that interests you and learn it to the bone.

For instance, if I were to come up with a creative idea on how to make a PHP program move twice as fast, nobody will probably notice it. Not that it wouldn't be worth implementing, but I'm not trying to be recognized for my creativity and artistic values, only my intelligence.
