Which server?

    Hey,

I was looking for some opinions about which of the following servers would deliver the best results. Basically one is a VPS with higher specs, the other is a dedi with lower specs. I'm just wondering whether the higher specs are enough to outweigh the fact that it's not dedicated?

The VPS has a far faster connection and far better processor, but the dedi has more RAM, and is obviously dedicated.

    Option 1:
    VPS
    German
    8.4ghz
    512mb RAM (1gb bustable)
    45GB space
    650GB bandwidth
    1GB connection

    Option 2:
    Dedicated
    Not sure about location?
    1.2ghz
    2gb RAM
    1TB space
    Unlimited bandwidth
    100MB connection

For those interested, this is the basic Kimsufi 2G and one of XSserver's VPS's.

What sort of CPU in the dedicated server? Is it multi-core? That would be my only concern, in all other ways it looks like a superior buy.

Not an expert on CPUs, but the more expensive packages have "4 x" in the CPU description, so I assume they're multi-core? In that case, the CPU in the dedi I'm looking at is not multi-core.

Meant to say that in my original post, it would be for hosting websites only, I wouldn't be running any software or anything from them.

It depends on your usage scenario.

High traffic, mostly static html pages:
need lots of bandwidth and a fat pipe, CPU not much of an issue

    Dynamic pages, large database:
need lots of RAM (more than 512MB for a site with decent traffic)

    Serving videos:
lots and lots and lots of bandwidth and a huge pipe

Generally I only use US hosts (if I'm targeting the US market) because geographic proximity to your target market has a huge impact on their surfing experience.

I would tend to pick a lot of RAM over raw processor speed but obviously you want a balance of the two.

It's mainly sites running WP, and there are a couple of them which are quite large, and several have decent traffic.

I'm using the VPS at the moment, but I'm finding it pretty slow, which is why I'm looking at going for a dedi.

I'm actually considering going for the Kimsufi 16G instead, it's more than I would really like to pay right now, but it may be worth it in the long run I guess.
