If you don't want to overload your site with plugins you can manually resize and compress the pictures before uploading them or simply create a batch process in photoshop.

Never tried smush Pro so can't really say, but it's hard to imagine that it's better - I'll give it a try on my next project to check out the results.

I recommend optimising your images BEFORE uploading them (I like: https://tinypng.com/).
Why?
- Fewer plugins means a faster site. (better UX, better for rankings, etc)
- You're using less of your hosting server's resources.

how many images you got? how often do you add images to your site?
for a paid version, the one time fee that shortpixel gives you for 15,000 images for $10 is reasonable.
i tried using this but the web-p beta option is broken.
