Fiverr is not bad if you want quick work without tons of verification, just be careful of scammy messages in the beginning. Upwork is okay, but in the recent years it is best if you have education or a good portfolio and if you are willing to pay for credits to apply.
Upwork has totally changed, and I do not know if a new member can get a good project for good money. Many agencies and people have upgraded their Upwork accounts for years. The bigger platform, the bigger efforts.
Maybe it is a good idea to start from local websites for freelancers. BHW is good platform too.

There isn’t a one size fits all approach to client acquisition.
You can find clients anywhere... it all depends on how you approach each platform.
Be it Upwork, Fiverr, here (BHW), or social media

I don't like those platforms at all (as a ex-developer)
The issue with the is that people usually compare by the price and your margins are not too high (Unless you are offering something really unique).
I would go on getting new customers on facebook groups and work on your relationship with them even if it means do some small stuff for free and ask them for recommendations.
