Which OS for a dedicated server? Windows 2008 or linux?

Proxmox or Hyper-V, either will do you well.

You do not want to attempt setting up a dual boot server (Linux & Windows), you will want to setup the machine to host virtual machines and then setup virtual machines as you desire. Using virtual machines allow you to setup your dedicated server once and avoid further OS reloads in the future as you change your mind or want to try new solutions.

There is no need to purchase a Windows VPS, your dedicated server is plenty powerful and handle numerous virtual machines without issue.

It really depend on your understanding with the Operating system !
 
Install linux if you know how to use it.After that install veeam monitor and you will be able to craete Virtual machines easily.
 
If you know how to use Linux, I suggest you go with it and install panels such as vestacp, ispconfig for your websites.

If you need Windows, either get a cheap VPS or do virtualization on your server(Xen,KVM) and get Windows. I only know of Plesk, when it comes to good panel for windows. but it's not free.
 
The selection between the two OS is totally depend on your understanding with the operating system. However, if you are comfortable with the Linux OS then I suggest you to good for Linux operating system. Since Linux operating systems are open source and you can download it for free and if you want, you will be able to modify the OS . Also, Linux OS is more secure then the windows operating system.

you should choose centos with a whm license ... that should solve all your problems.

That's pretty much 100% incorrect.

While FreeBSD certainly has a whole new learning curve compared to many of the popular Linux distros it is by no means handicapped by a lack of software. Nearly everything you run on Linux will or does already run on FreeBSD. The only real difference is FreeBSD excels more in the networking end of the spectrum than it does for every day use as a desktop OS or web server.

FreeBSD has its place and is used heavily.
 
hello !. Linux Dedicated Servers are always cheaper than Windows. The main reason is that there is a large community OpenSource (open source) and free apps

The main reason is Windows isn't free...Microsoft charges a monthly license fee to dedicated server/vps/cloud providers for each socket/vps running.
 
You're best bet for an os would be something like CentOS for it's size or just go with ubuntu server and be done with it. You'll get a decent repo with ubuntu but centos is also a great alternative. Windows 2008 is alright but just know you'll lose freedom of ease of use because WS isn't that great feature wise.​
