Which one should I trust?

Semrush usually captures a broader audience, including variations or regional searches. Ahrefs is usually more conservative and focused on actual clicks. So, it's up to you to decide which one to trust.

Their algorithms are different so we can't decide which one is perfect.
If you want to improve the specific metrics then check the suitable tool
As you know Semrush has AS but Ahrefs have not , Ahrefs have DR but Semrush have not
So depend on your requirement you use the tools

I'm not using either software, but there were some folks a while ago saying that Ahrefs is better at backlink / competitor analysis, while Semrush is better at keyword research and if that's true, you should probably trust Semrush

Target more keywords. More small keywords.
And use in h1 + h2 core keyword like mentioned.
The most powerful source of keywords is google suggestions. Scrape those and you're good at it. Make 100 chars long titles and put everything you can there. All LSIs.

There is no definitive answer as to which tool to trust more. It is best to look at both data and combine it with information from other sources to get a more comprehensive view. If you have to choose one over the other, base it on your experience and specific goals in SEO.

Instead, check the SERPs of your keyword and see which sites are ranking there.

neither! I don't have sites anymore, so I don't need tools.
Before that, however, I used Keyword Titan as I liked the guys behind it (well, I liked Jon Leger), but that was long ago (over 5 years ago I think), I'm not sure that KT is still maintained...
And towards the end of my SEO journey I moved from KT to Keysearch which was decent but not comparable to Ahrefs / Semrush, of course. And it was MOZ based, which is pretty bad, even if I did find uses for it in the price range that Keysearch had.
So yeah, I'm finally stress and headaches-free now
