which one does google like better ?

definitely do both, just wait a couple of weeks between them, so you can track the difference they make in your rank tracker.

forum links are outdated, pass less juice. good if they look natural but not in a scalable way.

one link from a real article on a real site with real rankings is worth 50 forum links.

Links surrounded by niche relevant content work out well, but forum links in moderation won't hurt. A healthy link
profile consist of a variety of links. I've seen both signature links and do-follow profile links boost rankings safely
despite what the White Hats claim about profile links. :D

Aim for quality, relevancy, and diversity OP.

The thing is my competition have articles on daily mail, huff post, and other high value media outlet's so will cost me to get a link in those articles on those sites which is why I'm trying to work out what's my best option

If your competition has links like that you need to think of a different approach. You're not going to outrank them unless you create a super-niche site that is long-form content and still has good links. Links from Huff Post and high-level media sites are hard to get and Google understands that. Your best bet is putting in some real time and money to create a good ass piece of content and earn those links the fair way.
