the hell?

most of those options listed are outdated martial arts

this is the new age. havent you heared of MMA?

do brazilian jui jitsu. its the best one.

we're talking about a 3 and a half year old.......

I like judo. Judo is easy enough on the body for a kid, and easy to learn the basics.

Tai kwon do! I see many kids with their fathers at the grading centre whenever i go for a promotion test :) It really helps them bond too imo.

my son's about 3 1/2 and i'm thinking about enrolling him in a kiddie martial art program. he really needs a good outlet for his energy...and i like the discipline that is taught w/martial arts...

i was gonna enroll him in karate, but others say i should start him off w/judo and then have him eventually move into jujitsu later down the road....

any suggestions?

I can strongly suggest you boxing or Muay Thai.

When someone would ask when I started martial arts, my dad use to spit out answers like: 'I don't know.. how old was she when she started

Nonsense, you can do Aikido easily when you are a kid. Kids are more flexible plus it's being done in a controlled enviroment with teacher supervision.

I don't think a small child would have the precision to do Aikido and virtually all of of the wrist / arm locks are off limits as a childs joints can be permanently damaged being undeveloped.

To the op ... I recommend to focus on activities which build balance and coordination at this stage, not a martial art, and above all ensure that the activities are FUN.

You kid can start a martial art later and will not be at a disadvantage if he has a gymnastics / trampolining sort of background.

I would say it's not about the martial art, so much as the teacher. Find the right teacher and you'll be giving your son the right discipline, spiritual background, and tools for life.

Krav Maga!
Not much of a philosophy behind it but winning, no matter what!

i have a 4 year old son and i'm thinking about the same thing, but what i am going to do is get him into gymnastics for flexibility and he loves running so a little athletics type of thing (i take him to the stadium and he just runs laps, as long as he;s in lane 4 he'll go forever)

i'll probably hold off on the actual martial arts until he's a bit older and his attention span can handle it (6-7 years old)

LukesDad, that is very ignorant if you don't mind me saying..

'Karate is founded on scientific principles of body movements that develop the karate devotee into a healthy, well coordinated person, both physically and mentally. The Chinese karate masters considered karate to be an extension of their religion. The Okinawan karate masters considered it to be a way of life: "It is, rather, an expression of life lived 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Indeed, the way of karate is a philosophy of life-a rich, rewarding philosophy if carried through, past the boundaries of obvious self-defense techniques, into the realm of mind-searching discipline. Within karate-do is the potential of a new person: a person huge in all the capabilities that will make him respected and confident." (The Way of Karate)'

I would advice karate. I was 4 years old when I started till I was 14. Then I did taekwondo for 2 years. after that I started fitness and when I was 24 I started doing Kickboxing.

Martial arts is good for discipline, self confidence and control of the mind.

Karate is good for self defence , as that is purely what is thought. It can be used in many events and toughens up the body to. I do not know Judo, so I cannot judge it.

Tai kwon do is the best option for your son, I was a player of Tai kwon do in the past and I really like my all golden moments which I spend there. I must say, you will really like Tai kwon do training.

Send him to learn judo and he will be the strongest kid in class.

I recommend that you first look for a good teacher that knows how to handle young children, you don't want your child to get injured.

Then decide if you want him to train for self defense or sport. For self defense I recommend Escrima or Kali. For sports wrestling, now that he is young, it is a good foundation and builds a strong hard body.

From those I'd go with Karate.
But that is pretty much a personal choice, the factor I'd choose to pick a martial art to engage would be the trainer, put him on the most successful gym with the most knowledgeable teacher.
Sincerely I think Judo and Tai kwon do by them selves are the ones of most use in practical terms I'd think about engaging in those if you already practiced another martial art already.
Don't expect results in a question of days or even months, martial arts are a life style, if you really are serious about this (and your son too of course) remember it is for life, if you are thinking about putting your kid there only for a couple months you better of letting him on day care or something like that cause the results will be none.
Best of luck!

Judo and wrestling based arts for really young children. And make sure you've had a good chat with the instructor, and they know how to train young kids.

I don't think it's a particularly good idea to start with 'striking' arts until they're at least 8-10. Wrestling is in kids blood - and they take quickly to it. Plus, if kids do ever fight, then it usually ends up as ground-fighting - so Judo is a better option.
