which type of link would be more valuable - in a post on a year-old, well-developed (80 original non-spun posts or so) web 2.0 property like Wordpress or Blogger, or in a post on a three year old PR0 domain with about 100 original non-spun posts (on a different IP from the money site)?

Also - does it make a significant difference to the value of the link to have it at the top of the post rather than the bottom?

    Thanks!

Contextual link positions work better (in the middle of the text) and the answer to what link is better would be the Web 2.0 property.

Absolutely correct, also dont forget high authority article directories. They do pass good link juice

As far as the link being in the top or bottom of the content - I typically shoot for 2 links per article (if say I'm guest blogging) and shoot for having 1 link at the top of the article.

I have no test data to back this up, but my thoughts are that most sites show-off new stories (and old stories as well) by using an excerpt of the article.

With a link high enough in the article so it shows as an excerpt you get a chance of not only grabbing a backlink from the article page itself, but from say a homepage or a "top stories" page as well - as the link appears in the excerpt it will appear whenever that story is dynamically shown throughout the site and hopefully get crawled while its showing up.

After Panda it works well to have links coming to your site from Web 2.0 sites. The links that are in the content as anchor text hold a high priority for the Search engines and they are among the first places where SE look for keywords. The keyword phrases should be in the content of the page as links.
