Which is the best way to do 301 Redirect

Hi,

Say i have a website(domain name) on general niche sports.

I also have an expired domain(Related to a sub topic in footbal) with good backlinks

Most of the backlinks on the expired domain is pointing towards it home page.

Now while doing 301 redirect

1) I should redirect the expired domain home page to my sports website or

2) I should redirect it to the category - Football or

3) I should create a sub category under football and redirect the expired domains homepage.

which you think is it best and will yield good results.
