Being the most popular doesn't always mean the best, just the most popular.
Please check ads.txt of any other decent site and you will see dozens of records from different ad networks there, not just AdSense. Adsense is something for the sites with no traffic, newbies, and those who still figuring out what to do. Once you grow you run multiple networks and working just with Adsense won't maximize your revenue.

AdSense is top of the list for only one reason - it's most popular, but in terms of the rates it wouldn't be that high or leading.

Most new publishers do that, established work with multiple networks. This start to change now as more networks lowering their requirements to let in who just started.

Google Ads pay per click network offers a comprehensive spread of pay per click ads. This includes: Search engine results pages, Display Network and Google Play app store, Google Shops, Gmail app, YouTube advertising. so google ads is currently best for me.

This would really depend on the type of content on your site. If the content is highly targeted, I would suggest highly targeted affiliate ads from high paying advertisers. You have complete control over what shows up that way and won't find yourself in a position where google decides your clicks are worth .02
