Some great advice here guys. For me, article directory submissions (GoArticles and Ezine Articles), web 2.0 sites (Hubpages and Squidoo), social bookmarking (Reddit, Tumbler, Digg), and guest posting on related blogs have been most effective.
article directories, niche blog posting and commenting, stay away from squidoo now. But personally I also like to create mini nets so as not to create a foot print. But you have to also be sure to focus on the content of your back links. Make sure its quality and relevant nothing spun unless you are doing black hat stuff.

Like others have said already, having back links from multiple sources and platforms is the key. So if you ask me what is the best link building technique then I would say that it's "DIVERSITY"
