Ahrefs by far, just keep using their $7 dollar trial when you need it :D
 
moz,majestic,ahrefs,semrush and all the popular tools offer to check the backlinks, each tool has some special features to analyse the backlinks, such as if you looking for the spam backlinks go with moz its easy to analyse like that if you want to check the backlinks without money go with small seo tools backlinks checker HAHA

There are various tools to check backlinks like semrush, ahrefs, backlink checker I personally suggest to use ahrefs tool as it also shows the competion pages organic keywords reffering domains.
 
Ahrefs is the best tool but Ahrefs is a paid tool and it also shows Ahrefs in free mode but if you use the paid version of Ahrefs than nothing is better than Ahrefs to check backlink.

I am using AHREFS tool and it is a good backlink checker tool.
 
Link Research Tools - it combines many of the databases of other link tools.

Probably not mentioned by many other people here because it is so prohibitively expensive.
