Which is Better? Old Computer Vs. VPS?

Hi,

I have a need to run bots basically 24/7 for youlikehits and addmefast, yahoo answers, ect..


My question is, which is better, just buying a new laptop and using my old one to basically just run tools, because I wanted a new laptop anyway?

My laptop currently has better specs than the vps that I was looking at. Plus at say $30/month it would pay for itself in just a few months.

I was just wondering if there is any unexplained benefit of a vps over an old computer?

Well just make sure your spare computer can handle the work load as well as your internet connection. I personally have a server specificly set up for mass emailing, another 2 set up for hosting, and I have another PC right next to me that is on 24/7 running bots with no loss of performance on my main connection. I really like being able to psychically be next to my machine at all times and have complete control over every aspect.

What I would do in your case is reformat your old computer and install only the programs/bots you want to run. See if it can handle the volume of what you want/desire, if not then look into buying a vps. Most answers can be solved with using split testing, so see if it works for you.
 
Awesome thanks for the info. Ok so the one question I have is does a VPS use my internet connection? Or does it use a 3rd party's internet connection?
 
Well if you are using it as a connection (downloading/uploading) from your pc to your vps then you will obviously be limited by what your internet can handle. But to answer your question the vps provider will have a dedicated speed/bandwidth that they can operate the vps at which is controlled by their isp.

Use both. Set up the home PC and run it until you need more bots or more speed. Then expand. No need to spend money on a VPS unless your home connection sucks or your family hogs the bandwidth.
 
I think you should get an win vps, you may find it under $10 512MB.
 
Running few duo core pc-s was my choice - and it was right decision for me. ... I'm running senuke on them

The main benefit of using a VPS over your home connection is not using up your bandwidth or exposing your home ip address when using tools like scrapebox or xrumer.
 
I would recommend VPS though.

Remember, if you're gonna get a new laptop and use your old laptop for IM 24/7, you need to share your internet speed with both laptops now... so that's gonna affect your productivity.

How I know? Because I was in your shoes before.

VPS, on the other hand, is on a dedicated virtual computer 24/7 with fast internet access. Just push the button of your software and close your RDP/Teamviewer and let your VPS do the work. Then lets say you bring your laptop outside, you can simply use teamviewer or RDP to check your VPS' progress. Won't that be better?

If you use proxies with the 2 computers in this situation, will that alleviate the bandwidth issue?

I clicked on your Cheap VPS signature picture and it said the site had been moved to trustsignup. Is that the URL?
 
VPS would be a lot easier on your bandwidth I would definitely go down that route

I agreed with this solution. It may take some of your time but you will know the best answer for your case :)
 
For under $20 a month you'd struggle to run a PC at home - even a small latop for 30 days 24/7 for the amount that costs in electricity alone
For that you get a cheap VPS that will run most things through a minimum of a 100Mb connection.
It also avoids your ISP from sending you nasty letters

I wouldn't consider using my home connection any more, not when a VPS is cheaper, quicker and as scaleable as you would ever need.

Cost benefit: will the marginal cost of a VPS outweigh the benefits (extra bandwidth, extra processing)?


Two ways of looking at it:
the apparent cost: how much extra revenue do you think you can bring in by using a VPS? (more productivity etc)
or the other side of the coin,
the hidden cost: how much revenue do you think you might be missing out on by not using a VPS?
 
C'mon man how slow does your internet connection to not being able to run some bots and other misc services? We are not in the dial-up era any more. Also a 512mb windows vps might be painfully slow so i won't recommend it ! So if you have an old laptop just sitting around doing nothing just use it as it doesn't require you to pay nothing extra, so it's zero initial investment.

Scrapebox can go through a lot of bandwidth very quickly. If you're on a 250 GB monthly limit and you run scrapebox all month you'll quickly be getting a letter from your isp. I agree that a 512 meg vps won't cut it vs an old laptop you might have sitting around but you can get a 2 GB 2 core vps for 27 bucks a month from Berman. That server would most certainly be more than enough for most seo tools.
 
My personally I will choose VPS one.
Great internet connection
Run 24/7
Run faster than pc with same cpu and ram
If You run your pc or laptop 24/7. I think it will broken in few months
 
27 bucks for a 2gb windows vps it's a pretty good deal!
