Hi Everyone,

i have done a search on BHW and there doesn?t seem to be a straight forward answer.

i am looking to purchase a domain that has already been taken for my KW, however i can purchase it with a hyphen or an extra letter

so should i be getting abx.com or a-b.com? i will be looking to get my visitors direct from the search engines and not really looking for them to type the site directly.

Both are not exactly ideal. What about an extra word? Adding a letter to the end of a word is hard to remember, same with a hyphon, but if its a phrase its much easier.
 
is that better for the domain name? wont that make the keyword match worse?
 
My point of view is to add an extra letter but remember that is is not confusing because some times I get confused in s or z in some of the site's URL. May be the end letter can signify the first letters of the full name of your site. :)
 
I would recommend to choose abx.com. Dashes are always confusing for people to remember.
 
ba.com would be better. Then abx.com. Hyphens are completely out nowadays.
 
I have to disagree with everyone. One of my highest ranking and highest profiting sites right now uses a hyphen. In retrospect, I'm not sure if I would have chosen that name, however, I don't think it will make or break you.

An extra letter can be just as confusing for someone to remember. If you are trying to "brand" the site then choose the one that sounds better/is easier to remember (this will be relative to your keywords). If you are not trying to brand your site and you're just focusing on SEO, I don't think either name choice will make or break your success...

How about adding an additional extra word to make your site more specific about something? It might sound better than a-b or abx in my opinion.

agree with azguru, I have seen sites with hyphens outrank EMD. I have actually read that search engines like hyphens as it makes the url more readable, which is a good thing. But due to the norm, get an EMD if you can, if not, see what alternatives you can do. abx is also good if abx could also bring some traffic from the abx keyword.
 
In the first f-ing message he stated that he won't be getting visitors from direct typing but from search engines.

In this way you need to go with a-b as google will treat it like a KW match, which probably won't happen with abx
 
Both are not good enough ..
But within these two i recommend abx.com
 
abx.com is better, there was an interesting case study on a paid forum comparing several keywordkeywordxyz versus keyword-keyword and the ones that ended in consonant won big time
 
I've wondered about this myself. Is it better to have a stop letter or stop word for readability in the domain? weightlossx or weightlossinfo. To me it would seem a stop word would be better, but does it even matter? If so how?
 
I think people put too much emphasis on urls. I have ranked urls with a letter on the end as well as using -'s, got a .info to #1 easily (though was low comp) and my current site im working on which its main keywords are #2 in google is a .co domain. In all honesty I think it matters very little the most important thing is using unique well written content with a good backlinking structure. If you build it they will come...
 
it doesn't matter. It's in the marketing.

both fine from seo point. Now ask your self, which one you like. If u don't like domain, then you will not do good work with domain.
 
If I were you I would go for abx.com. Thats much catchy and good to hear.
 
I would go with hyphens. Make it easier to read. For example. my-forum.com as against myforumx.com. my-forum looks and reads so much better than myforumx which is kinda confusing if you are visitor or reader.
