Which degree at UNI?

If you must get a degree (I highly recommend skipping it and going straight into the work place) go for something like Economics and/or Business.
Understanding how businesses work and understanding economies is very important to be successful as an IMer. If you don't naturally know this, then learn it at Uni.
I understand that you want a backup. But trust me, unless you're studying towards a technical degree like Engineering (which will in no way help you with IM) then you are just whittling money away worthlessly. Almost all other degrees don't get you jobs. You think you'll get a job, then you come out of uni and realize that, of shit, 1000 other people have my degree. Why would a company hire me, a business graduate, when they can hire this other person who has had experience running businesses?
Thats the thing. Outside of technical degrees, you might as well go out and get solid work experience instead. When you write a CV, do you know what you put first and foremost? Work experience. Do you know what gets delegated to the bottom in a corner hidden away? "Qualifications". No one cares. They want proof that you can do their job. And that comes from work experience.
So if you want a backup, either go for a completely non-IM field, or else split your time between IM and pursueing a RL job. Use your time you'd have spent at uni getting work experience instead.

I would recommend Psychology...the study of people. To be honest though it depends on your style of learning...how you like to learn that is.
If you live in the UK why not do it at open university, as you can combine your chosen subject with maybe a computer course as well. The advantage being you can do this at home and also do your IM stuff. The disadvantage being....it is more difficult to apply yourself, you can get distracted( i will do it later, i will just watch a movie then.....etc.) And in certain cases you can get this free....no loans to pay back.
Good luck whatever you choose.

University is the biggest scam I've encountered. So many people I know who have gone, had big dreams and have come out and found their time was wasted. Their degree doesn't get them jobs after all. These people had invested all of their time into uni so have had nothing to fall back on. And its no wonder, most of the stuff you learn (outside of technical degrees) you could learn on your own, easily.
Its just really unfortunate but people (including those in it) actually really believe in uni. Gah gah.

I agree. It's better to just learn a job and insert into the market instead of wasting time and money

Wow, you guys are really lucky that you can choose whether or not to go to university.
In my country, if I don't get in to university, I will get drafted.(force in to military)

I hate school, so I did a 2 year KY (qualified work education).. Basically you study what you want to work with, nothing else. No math or stuff like that.. I went with system development with Java so thats all I read about. Now I work as a consultant and make good money..
Not enought since Im here but still good for a normal job
and 6 months of those 2 years was internship.
And yes, now I can code my own bots

Its best to get certifications like A+ and the Microsoft office certifications. Not only will you learn how to deal with computers better but if you need to get a job as backup it will help you get one in the Tech industry.

I am a physics major (2 semesters left) and everyday I regret not going into engineering instead.
Most general and social sciences are useless unless you want to become a teacher; physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, biomedical science. I have a lot of friends that majored in biomed that didn't get into med school, and now they cant find a job.
Business related majors wont guarantee you a job but are required if you want a job in business. MBA's are really only necessary if you have a non business major and want to be promoted into management.
Since you are interested in business and IM, I suggest you major in Business Administration (different schools have different sub concentrations, marketing, hospitality, etc..) or even International Business.
