AV isn't really required, they are a resource hog and in some circumstances will increase the potential attack surface.
Most viruses that are likely to do any damage to you are i.e. are able to exploit weaknesses in modern browsers will evade antivirus protection.
Just don't download dodgy, free, cracked software from unverified sources.
