Simple thing

White hat is like something that can be done by a human and black hat is some think that is robotic. But the most popular tools don't get hurt by Google and its because they have built it by keeping in mind the last human border. that's why they don't get caught.

What would be the reason to get a link from them? To build authority? To rank higher?

If so, according to Google you are violating their TOS by trying to manipulate their search engine, so it is blackhat.

I think white hat do not exist any more since a site cannot come to 1st posting with out any links now a days , if you are having a high athority site like wiki or amazon then it will show up since some one will point to your site form there , for others small to medium site you need backlink , IMO white hat is where you built site and no back links and wait for some one to point to your site naturally ( i mean you should not ask them bribe them pay them nothing ) , Every thing that you do or hire to link back to your site comes under gray hat and black hat

very hard to find pure whit hat site.
