Where'd you learn SEO?

good question. im a complete beginner myself.

as far as i can tell, there are no places to sit down and learn the absolute basics, short of digging around multiple forums and blogs and piecing together information that way

I learned first through webmaster forums and then seo ebooks and finally by experiemnting. Best teacher of all is experimenting!

any books you can recommend?

No it does not cover blackhat stuff, I doubt there will be any blackhat seo ebooks. It's all whitehat, but good nonetheless.

I learned most stuff from forums.

Check out the Video Professor of SEO Brad Callen.
Just search for "Brad Callen SEO" on google and find tons of his stuff.
Just follow some of his links and you will find tons of books for free by Brad on basic SEO... He is the king...

There is one place to learn blackhat SEO and that's the SERPS. Isn't that where you want to rank? Don't waste your time on course and spend only a limited time in forums and message boards. If you're going to be good at this business you need to be looking at the serps at least 2-3 hours a day watching what's happening where, who's ranking, how they are doing it. It's all right there in front of you, you just have to learn how to see it. Most ideas you're going to find in books are already dead or long term whitehat ideas. To be on the cutting edge of BH you need to look where you want to rank and learn how to read that.

Once you've spent a gang of time reading and understanding the serps then you'll want to manually start building sites and testing if you're theories are right. Test, Test, Test. At any one time I'm running 10-20 tests. Once one works I write programs or have programs written to automate it and make 1000's of whatever it is working. Then start looking for the next idea. There is no cookie cutter format to this stuff. If something starts working people WILL copy you and eventually kill it. So with that said most ideas you find on a forum or msg board are on their way out. You might make it to 100$ a day with them but then they'll keep dying.

Learn to read the serps and you'll learn to be ahead of the curve.

Hope this helps.

P.S. A short list of things you should know to really well in this business:
Javascript
CSS
HTML
PHP
UNIX Management
MySQL
All these tools will come in very handy and use them everyday!

Power Linking Strategies By Jack Humphrey

Not totally SEO, it's more on linking & getting lots of traffic.

Planet Ocean stuff is also quite good but very mainstream, nothing unique in there.

I'm still new to SEO. I learn mostly from webmaster forums and blogs.
How long did it take? I think we'll have to learn all the time since SE algo is always changing.
