Where to start SEO?

I am a complete newbie I have no idea how to start SEO my site and I used the search function searching for "how to seo" but I didn't find anything updated and helpful.
So, I am posting this thread, asking for your guidance to give me some general idea of how I will start learning SEO and what I have to do for the best possible outcome.
I know what SEO is I just don't know where and how to start.
I don't mind if it's blackhat,greyhat or whitehat.

Make sure you first do tests but not with your original website because you might risk it. It is better to talk to someone one on one before you go.

Not sure how you can say you that you searched and didn't find anything helpful. Sorry to be blunt like that, but there are actual forum sections dedicated to different methods of SEO. I have subscribed to many threads by simply clicking the 'New Posts' link and going through the pages of posts (so these posts are more than likely recent). I understand being at a place where you feel that it is difficult to find what you want, or not knowing what to look for as I am starting my journey as well.

Think about this... Just like there is more than one keyword or search you can do in Google to get where you want, there is probably more than one search you can do to find 'seo tactics', 'seo tips', 'seo strategies' **hint hint**. Only saying this because, you don't want to get in the habit of having things 'fed' to you.

But thanks for posting this, as people have brought up post I can subscribed to and read later -- as I wasn't researching SEO at the moment, but it is always something good to know. So to contribute --- search for "Basic SEO practices for newbies" -- Not sure if I can post links or not, but it will be good practice to use search feature.

First learn about seo and see what it is.....then learn new updates and new methods of seo then start doing

Get started simply but effectively suggests:
1. Optimize your websites: especially homepage: keywords, title, code, metas and internal links.
2. Submit to search engines:
3. Add some external links.
4: Update your website more frequently with original content.
These 4 things are most important and effective way to start SEO.

Just read the old and also new threads regarding to SEO of this forum and participate in discussion, ask reputed and senior members a question. It is the best way to learn this instead of just read the whole forum and still don't know the abc of SEO. If you don't ask you never get....

You can do by Document Submissions, Article Submissions, Use web 2 property sites, Forum posting, Yahoo Answers,Press Release, Guest Posting, Social networking Sites, Social Bookmarking Sites and Niche Directories

First I read this book "[h=1]Search Engine Optimization:
Your visual blueprint for effective Internet marketing [Paperback][/h]" that give me some understanding on what seo is about. Than I read and learned from forums.....
