Where to Start ? New to SEO

Hi People I want to build traffic to my friends site but I have never done SEO before although I am familiar with some of the terms like link building.

My question is for a newbie like me what is the best way to get started ? Please feel free to share your insight and advice on how I should go about in the world of SEO

From the bottom and work your way up, don't waste your time looking for shot cuts. Most basic of SEO, make high quality web2 sites and point them to your money site.
