Where to start learning HTML/CSS for sites?

I'm starting from zero and want to be able to edit WordPress themes and create landing pages. Which short learning path and free resources will teach the essentials of HTML/CSS in the quickest, most practical way (specific pages/courses, key topics to master first, and three small projects to build while learning)?

Go to Meta ads library to find landing pages. Search "ebook". Save the landing page to your computer using Control + S. Then edit the html and css. You'll need a product to sell too.

For HTML and CSS you can try w3schools and it's free. As far as courses go, everything for web development is covered by Angela Yu's course on Udemy. You can get it when there are promotions on Udemy and the price is around 10-20$ I think.

i suggest try out all the tags fom w3shool then try to go for a facebook ,netflix or any your favourite website page if you stuck try stackoverflow or get help from bhw community

@drew2 is on the money with ripping pages, that is basically how i learned to tweak landers years ago. but if you want to edit wordpress themes specifically you need to get comfortable with chrome devtools first. just right click inspect element on any wp site and play with the css in the browser to see what breaks. for free resources skip the massive courses and just play flexbox froggy to learn layout, then look up css selectors on youtube. for your three projects: first try to change a basic wp theme header layout using only custom css. second, rip a simple lander and make it responsive for mobile. third, build a basic squeeze page from scratch with just a single html file and a stylesheet. dont overcomplicate it with deep javascript yet if you just want to get landers up and running.

First follow along some youtube tutorials. Then you can use gemini to say something like *I am learning html/css and please make me a complete webpage and explain it to me on the front end* It will make you a complete single page in 2 minutes and you can look at the code directly.
What before would take hours you can do in minutes and gemini is free.

ripping is definitely the fastest way to learn but watch out when you try to edit wp themes directly. wp templates are mostly php so if you just want landers its way easier to host static html files on netlify or a cheap vps. if you want to practice, focus almost entirely on form action tags and media queries. most ripped landers break on mobile or the submit button doesnt work... that is where you actually need to know your css.

w3schools is fine for looking stuff up but the content there gets outdated, mdn web docs is better once you're past the absolute basics. the ripping advice works for sure but the catch is you end up copying without really getting why things break, and you hit a wall the moment a layout doesnt behave and you cant google your way out of it.

frontendmentor.io is worth checking out, they hand you real design files and you build them yourself, free tier is more than enough. better practice imo than just rebuilding netflix because the markup is cleaner to compare your own against.

one thing on the wp side, dont start by editing themes. get comfy with plain html/css first, then when you do touch wordpress use a child theme so you're not messing with core files. people skip that step and then lose all their edits the second the theme updates.
