Where To Move For One Year+?

Hey guys. My roommate and I decided that we want a fresh start and want to move somewhere for a year or possibly even longer. We were thinking NYC but we live in Canada and it's incredibly hard to move to the US, so the US is out of the question (at least for now). So anyway, I was thinking you guys could point out some nice places to live. Preferably places that have good internet and programmer jobs would be nice. And also an English speaking city would be preferred but not necessary.

I currently live in London, Ontario.

Hah. I am in the same boat. London, ON is horrible for local jobs right now. One of the highest unemployment rates in the area. Good luck finding a place you will enjoy. I intend to do this if things don't look up.

Ya I put out a ton of resumes and only got a call from Staples. Went through about FIVE interviews with them over 2 days. They never called back so I called them and they said they found someone else. I'm just gonna stick to IM haha. You should PM me your Skype maybe we can chill sometime.

If you both are good at what you do then try to work as a freelancer for Pharmaceutical companies in Switzerland, pay will be 10-15k usd net each a month . Although english is not spoken well by the average Swiss citizin there are a ton of foreigners here who do.

I really suggest to live together to cut costs and save money as living in Switzerland can be quite expensive in cities.

don't move to melbourne. i went there for a week two years ago and absolutely hated it. maybe every big city is like that, i'm not sure (i live in adelaide which is a lot smaller), but people there are so rude. they walk into you, they don't give a ****. i just couldn't believe how bad the people were.

edit: also everyone that i've spoken to who has been to melbourne has also hated it, lol...

Well my roommate is in school for advertising and I'm in school for programming. I don't really want to be a programmer though (I'll still take a job though). He started a small website design company though so we're gonna build off of that for now.

What do you mean by doing freelancing for Pharmaceutical companies though?

Have you considered Asia? You could easily teach English for about 20hr/week, the pay is good and many places will pay for your apartment/airfare/food. Gives you plenty of extra time to travel and work IM.

You mean I can just go there and start teaching English? Wouldn't I need some form of documentation allowing me to do so? Also, I haven't really looked into Asia at all yet. Been mostly looking at Canada and Europe.

Personally, I would choose New Zealand, the country of extreme sports.
Realistically, maybe the best choice would be one of the other Canadian towns...that wouldn't involve paying too much for miles and miles up to Melbourne or Auckland, at which it adds up some reserve for a few months at least, until you get a job. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I know, in New Zealand there are more jobs in the agricultural sector then in technology and in Australia prices are pretty high.

What about Amsterdam? There seem to be plenty of tech jobs there, both hardware and software. I recently got a 6 month contract there, heading in mid november. I have been there before, lovely city, attitudes, although in the city it's expensive..!

The last 2-3 years Pharmaceutical companies don't have many permanent job offers they rather hire freelancers for short term contracts (often 6 or 12 months which can be terminated at any time with 1 month notice ).

They pay the freelancer a fixed rate per hour of which the freelancer needs to pay all the cost himself ( taxes, health care, etc ). Many freelancers hire a payroll company to deal with all the costs but that is not obligated.

I do not know anything about advertising jobs but i do know programmers are always wanted.

You're totally right saying that I should look more into staying in Canada, however, we really want to move somewhere that's a completely new experience than what we're used to. Obviously though searching for an apartment and lining up jobs ahead of time will be difficult and expensive. Same with coming home for holidays.

It's really going to depend on how much money we both have saved a year or 2 from now which is when we're planning on moving. We're just trying to get a good idea of where we want to go for now.

lol. Even CPA's seem to have a hard time unless they sign with their CO-OP. The only IT jobs that crop up in London are Tech Support ("Yay" for A+ Certification), and jobs that require knowledge in archaic libraries that are either not taught, or so outdated that it is sad -_-; (also requiring 3+ years prior experience).

I was actually looking into Amsterdam. I know the main language there is Dutch. Do you think it would be necessary to learn Dutch or could I get by with little to no Dutch at all?

I'm in CPA but didn't even do a co-op. However, my schooling is really just a backup plan. I just want to do IM and start a business offline as well.

Hmmm, interesting. I'll have to look into this more.

I think in Amsterdam you will get on grand without dutch. Some companies require you to speak dutch, but many don't. I don't speak it, and plan to head there with english only, and get some dutch classes when I'm there so I can settle down better. It seems somewhat similar to German of which I have some so should be grand.

But it's a really nice city, the canals, parks... its just a cool chilled out place. And bicycles make life so easy, no traffic..!

I have heard some great things from friends that moved to Montreal. Their jobs were computer related as well.
