Ok. Say i have 20 thousand dollars laying around i wanna spend on developing an application.

I want it to be a type of Instant Messanging application that is cross platform, Windows, Mac and Linux and can connect to MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM and all others... good graphics and all that shit as well...

How much would i be spending to get something like that, well done.

First, dont tell anyone you have xx money.

If i know what i expect it to cost, i set a budget smaller as most people will try to stay inside your budget.

sometimes i just dont put a budget to try and get the fairest price.

My projects are way smaller though.

Scriptlance will let you post the project and you dont pay til you accept someone. You can get a good idea of what it will cost to do it. Getafreelancer has an option right now that you can get a free project if it is your first project.

not as familliar with the others.

This is based on 13 projects i listed and completed, I have developed some good working relationships with a couple of them.

I do Not recommend scriptlance.com even though you will get a cheaper price. I thought it was going to be a great place because it is mostly geared towards coding. However I have had nothing but unprofessional programmers even the ones with high ratings. They are awarded project and then they contact me 5-7 days later with excuses saying they can no longer do the project. This has happened on 3 separate occasions with different projects.
I'm giving Guru.com and the service prices are a little higher but worth it.

On scriptlance people bid around $450 for my project. When I posted the same project on Guru.com bids were around $1200. Remembering an old trick you can negotiate anything if you just ask. I sent private messages to the potential programmers and asked them if they could complete the project for $400. In the end I got them down to $600 to $700 depending on which service programmer I wanted..

Hi fella, from my experience the best places to get good quality software developers are at elance and guru.com, I have never used elance but have heard great thing about it, and I have used guru.com and there are some very talented people on there.

if you want to do something like this, build it around a jabber setup and you have clients for most os's already done and you can probably just adapt some gpl clients and reskin them or something like that, i wouldnt build this from scratch, there are faaaar too many issues in this

    Like I said, I recommend Rentacoder.com

Make use of their free NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) and make all the programmers sign it before being able to view your project. That way, they can't (legally) steal your ideas and pawn 'em off as their own.

I've used elance and can recommend it.
Found a programmer that I use for all the software I need creating.

One thing ... people can sign whatever you like, and still rip you off. If you can, if your software is modular, investigate the possibility of getting your software designed by 2 or 3 programmers. Can be tricky yes ... but then no one gets the whole package.

The best choice though, is always personal recommendation -

I used getafreelancer.com but I had a lot of people also with good reviews that couldn't do the work.

Look for any good company from India, you cant even imagine how cheap you can get your software needs fullfiled when done from India, due-dillegence is suggested.
